Currently reading Jo Boaler’s Mathish. Is there a science education book similar to this? One that talks explicitly about teaching? (Note: I know many of the strategies she discusses can and often are already applied in science ed.)

Propublica released an index of private school demographic data. (exciting! interesting!) A quick glance at the data for the gilman school is a reminder that sometimes Mathematically Correct Statements are not Spiritually Correct Statements. projects.propublica.org/private-scho...

However, the school’s student body had more racial diversity than the district’s two bar charts compare gilman school's demographic data to baltimore city's. the gilman chart has roughly 68% white, 11% black, 1% latino, 14% asian american, 4.3% pacific islander, 7% multiracial. baltimore city public schools: 7% white. 75% black. 15.7% latino. vanishingly small bars for the remainder. The underlying math behind the simpon diversity index (enwiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diversity_index#Simpson_index ) text reads: If the dataset is small, and sampling without replacement is assumed, the probability of obtaining the same type with both random draws is: mathish: l = sum of i from 1 to r of ( n sub i times ( n sub i minus 1) ) divided by N times N minus 1. commentary: the simpson index is similar to measuring the entropy of a collection of items. in this context, it's mathematically correct that the gillman school has more "entropy"; by removing almost 80% of the city's ambient demographic makeup of latinos and black students, what you are left with WILL mathematically have more entropy. the framing of this being more diverse in a dataset connected to piece that analyses "segregation academies" feels a bit... off, to say the least. like, here's what is undeniably a segregation academy, but the auto-text says this is diverse. lol. lmao. maths.
