#Microfauna
The fossil record preserves bones, not biodiversity.
But extinction happens at the scale of bacteria, fungi, mosses, microfauna, parasites, soil invertebrates.
Entire kingdoms of life disappear without leaving a mark.

Prehistoric Nugget Microfauna
The evopsych reason why toddlers like dino nuggies is that in the ancestral environment only those children who could hunt chicken nuggets, survived.

Evolutionary psychologists theorize that this prehistoric nugget microfauna was hunted to extinction.

Andy is a great follow if you like microfauna!
So, @frankashwood.bsky.social persuaded/reminded me that I should come back to Bluesky, especially after the exodus from Musk’s odious platform, as many people seem to have come here. So here’s a baby Holacanthella laterospinosa, which be of the amazing giant springtails from New Zealand…!

Esta hormiga Camponotus? recorriendo flores de encina me recordó que tengo que hacer más caso a los detalles y a la microfauna de los Quercus.

1/ Meet Kikiki huna — the world’s smallest flying insect.
This fairy wasp is so tiny, it makes ants look like giants.

Charismatic microfauna delayed report from a deliciously cool morning includes chirpy but unseen songbirds in the trees, copious squirrels, a shuffling groundhog, and an actual murder of crowd flying ahead of me. 🪶

Lovely and fascinating story about some "charismatic microfauna"
Hey, it's my print debut for National Geographic! This fall, I got to accompany folks from the Fort Worth Zoo on an incredible adorable mission: releasing tiny Texas horned lizards to new lives in the Hill Country.

(You will want to click on this one, trust me. The photos are adorable.)
Is the grumpy-faced Texas horned lizard adorable enough to survive?
As habitat loss and invasive predators decimate the Texas horned lizard population, researchers are banking on statewide fervor to bring them back.

Hey, we all like fireflies, right? Of course we do! So please: LEAVE YOUR LEAVES! Firefly larvae need the protection that fallen leaves provide to complete their life cycle. Even just allowing part of your yard to be covered with leaves can help the arthropods/invertebrates/microfauna living there.

I'm currently writing a book chapter about deep soil life, and I'm fully entranced by the diversity and adaptability of soil microfauna.

If you've got any amazing facts, which you think MUST be included - about things like bdelloids, nematodes, tardigrades etc., drop them in the comments below! 🧪
