This is, btw, Microsoft retreating from OpenAI.
TD Cowen reports that Microsoft has actually walked away from TWO GIGAWATTS of compute capacity, owing it to them deciding not to support OpenAI's training workloads, and Microsoft being in an "oversupply position." It's even worse than I previously thought!

Gosh, sounds like fair use to me. It's not like OpenAI / Microsoft cared one bit about licenses or copyright when they absorbed my entire legal blog into their LLMs via Common Crawl. Why should their probabilistic LLM outputs get better copyright protection than my original human work?

Just crossed the terminal: Microsoft disclosures suggest that OpenAI is about 70% of AI sales! If only someone had said something
August 5, 2026 at 6:13 PM
Oh hey would you look at that. Guess Microsoft literally funds OpenAI so that OpenAI can spend money on Microsoft azure, which Microsoft then invests back into OpenAI. Microsoft just feeding itself cash, losing more every single time, for some reason. Amazing!

Why is Apple, Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Blackstone, Google, OpenAI, Amazon and others financing the destruction of the WH and desecration of the grounds, something that is infuriating to huge chunk of the American population? Do you hate your customers that much?

Here's this week's 3900-word premium column, where I ask a simple question: Could Microsoft Kill OpenAI? The answer is "yes" if they won't budge on the terms of the negotiation to convert OpenAI to a for-profit entity - and Microsoft is threatening to walk away.

OpenAI will, starting in 2028, have to start paying $30bn a year to Oracle, $28bn to Microsoft for Azure, and also $2.9bn to CoreWeave for compute. That’s $60.9 billion *in compute costs alone*. This company is an absolute joke and should be treated as such.

One lesser-discussed point is that the negotiations between Microsoft and OpenAI have been going on for 8+ months, and gone nowhere, because OpenAI wants to give Microsoft less in return for nothing. Microsoft owns their IP and research too.
