the idea: DSVs always have to compromise between optimized aquadynamics for sinking (more time spent at depth) or aquadynamics optimized for horizontal traversal (able to cover longer distances at depth)

The DSV Nekton can rotate about its pressure hull so that it can have the best of both worlds

And “nekton” is the opposite - anything that moves by itself. I learned this when I was reading Moby Dick and my dad said something like “you know what he’s really talking about in that passage are nekton” - and I was like wth are you talking about

During their Larval stage, Remora hang in the water column amongst the plankton and display huge, colorful caudal fins. This 2 inch long specimen displayed their yellow fin so brightly I thought it was bioluminescent. #marinelife #plankton #nekton #blackwater 🦑

Since I’m new here I think it’s also worth mentioning that I’m a nekton enthusiast. Do we have any other blackwater divers on here? Composite image of various planktonic creatures photographed in the Gulfstream off Boyton Beach, FL #blackwater #plankton #nekton #marinelife 🦑

It doesn't come across as well in artificial lighting but Steve is looking absolutely incredible-he's GLOWING a vivid buttery yellow

Apparently a combination of supplements (Nekton), wanting a lot of baths recently, and deciding he eats Top's pellets now 🪶
