Beginning to think a bee was in charge of drawing up parish boundaries in Nairnshire/east Inverness-shire.
Outlines of five parish boundaries in Nairnshire and Inverness-shire: Petty, Croy and Dalcross, Cawdor, Nairn and Daviot. The boundaries are ridiculously jagged and fragmented, with exclaves of some parishes in other parishes.

Another day, another 'lost' early church site to investigate. Something tells me the odds on this one ever having existed are not good.
Detail of a 1965 index card kept by Historic Environment Scotland on a supposed chapel of St Ninian (or St Ringan) at Foynesfield near Auldearn, Nairnshire. The card first has a quote from George Bain's 1893 History of Nairnshire: "'A chapel, dedicated to St Ninian, existed at Foynesfield (St Ninian's Well - NH85SE 2 - is at NH 8952 5379). It was known by the Gaelic form of 'St Ninian', viz. 'St Ringan', and the place is called 'Ringan' by the Gaelic-speak- ing people to this day. A clump of ash trees alone remains to mark the site of the ecclesiastical settlement." This is followed by a note by an Ordnance Survey official dispatched to assess the site in 1965: "The 'clump of ashtrees' mentioned by Bain could not be located and there is no local knowledge of the site of St Ninian's Chapel."

A new blog, about the 'scalingas de Fathenechten' mentioned in a charter of David I of c.1150. It's usually identified with Fornighty in Nairnshire, but what does the name actually mean? (I'm acutely aware that after all this, a linguist or toponymist may be able to tell me the answer in seconds!)

For #FindsFriday I'm on the trail of small biconical dark blue glass beads like the ones in the pic. They are from (l) a putative Roman camp at Galcantray in Nairnshire, and (r) the Iron Age broch at The Cairns in Orkney. Anyone know of any more beads of this type from sites in northern Scotland?
A sketch and a photograph of two c. 1cm-diameter dark blue, bi-conical glass beads. One was found by Barri Jones in 1986 at the supposed Roman temporary camp site at Easter Galcantray in Nairnshire (perhaps in reality a native Pictish or Iron Age settlement), and the other was found by Martin Carruthers and team during ongoing excavations at The Cairns in South Ronaldsay, Orkney, and is labelled 'Roman Bi-Conical'.

Feeling very inspired by this new (open access!) study of early medieval Rendlesham and environs. I'd love to do something like this for my study area (Nairnshire), although I lack most of the skills, have almost no pre-1200 textual sources, and no Portable Antiquities Scheme database to mine :(

Darkest before the dawn and all that. The blog will go up tomorrow and is my attempted analysis of the Nairnshire farm-name Fornighty, first recorded in a charter of David I from the early 1150s.
