This is a seismic gut punch to the weather enterprise.
It is impossible to overstate how important @unidata.bsky.social is in implementing many datasets/libraries (LDM, netCDF, THREDDS, metPy) we currently use in meteorological research & operations.

There's a freely available tool from NASA/GISS, which @climateofgavin.bsky.social directs, called Panoply. Highly recommended if you're trying to visualize netCDF, HDF or GRIB data. I used Panoply to make the animation.

Unidata maintains a lot of key weather data infrastructure, including the netCDF data standard and libraries, metpy. data dissemination servers for accessing models and observations from NOAA, and educational resources for the university community. Now everyone is furloughed b/c of Trump and DOGE.

A great wrong has been done here. Unidata's technologies, training materials, and standards, down to the NetCDF data format itself, are the backbone of the meteorological field.
Due to the current gap in funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the NSF Unidata Program is pausing most operations effective 12 May 2025. Nearly all staff will be furloughed until funds from our existing NSF grant become available. For more information, see buff.ly/d2TC1Oy

On (or around) October 6th, for the first time in its 20+ year history, the SPC Mesoanalysis will be available to the field in real time via NCEP NOMADS.
Oh, and it’s in NetCDF, not GRIB.

You may have seen this news shared today and wondered why it matters. I could write a long report on the many ways Unidata impacts students, educators, scientists, and institutions. For brevity, allow me to share one small specific example that, until now, I have taken for granted.

AI tools have gotten quite good at cleaning, merging, and analyzing large datasets. They can seamlessly operate with more niche filetypes like NetCDF, as well as help put together a clean and well-documented file management system.
