#Netrek
We had DECstations and that puckmouse when I was in college. We lost game privileges when one numbnut broke thirteen (13) of them in a violent rage one weekend because we kept blowing him up over and over in Netrek.

Back when I worked at DEC, Quozl introduced me to NETREK.

This is not that. Meet NOTREK.

Singleplayer fleet conquest for the fate of the Galaxy.

I don't think I played netrek until I was on Linux! I was on TrekMUSE though in middle school.

Back in the early 1990s, the UVic Fine Arts computer lab had Sun SPARC workstations, incredibly advanced tech at the time. And so I used it to play Netrek (the guy in the back corner of the lab built a company he eventually sold to IBM) youtu.be/UYTfVMNx4-8?...

Awesome!

Played so much Netrek Paradise back in the 90s; well, before QWTF took over

went to Marigold Elementary in the 80s / 90s and we spent a silly amount of time playing Netrek on Mac Pluses.

Working on the 5th(?) replacement display for the games themed RetroFest in Cambridge next month.

So my last best hope for a display, my Babylon 5 as it were, is a couple of Sun workstations with xpilot, netrek & maybe Quake & Quake II on them.

Much installing & upgrading today. Just like work.

I don't know why, but I get a vibe graphically of a more modern Netrek

@ennui.org Even if no one else remembers, in my head I will never live down that I earnestly argued against UDP netrek because I thought it would just be duplicating everything TCP had to do and not provide any real benefit.

Vibe coded netrek-style game in Rust.

A full game? Nope. Able to have the ships move, multiple ships connect (on my machine), fire phasers and torpedoes, cloak, deal damage and explode? Yes.

Pretty amazing with almost all the code generated.

Apollo workstation in the UC Berkeley OCF spring 1992. Then Sun 3/50s (4MB RAM, swapped over the net, aka “Vice Chancellor Neff, you put the entire department into hock for a decade for WHAT?”)

A friend put me in front of one to play Netrek while he worked. It crashed. ~33 years in IT later…
