🦐 Two new amphipod species, Niphargus almensis and Niphargus uchansi, have been discovered in the underground rivers of Crimea, representing the first riverine hyporheic niphargids recorded from the peninsula and expanding our knowledge of these freshwater crustaceans: doi.org/10.3897/zse.102.206462

In April 1948, in a cave in Devon, a tiny, blind shrimp was found in a cave - a species that had never been seen before. It was named Niphargus glenniei, the British Cave Shrimp, and in the years since it has never been seen anywhere outside of Devon and Cornwall; a species endemic to Britain.

An #Amphipod blast! Made some great observations while doing #fieldwork in the Ajoie🇨🇭/Sundgau🇫🇷:
Densities of >1000 individuals of #Gammarus at 10x10 cm riverbed, #Niphargus in the Clos du Doue, and hundreds of free-swimming Gammarids.

Such a rewarding day!

Bordel.
Imagine la vie du niphargus. T'as rien à foutre de la journée, tu te gèles les miches dans l’eau froide et tu peux même pas t'occuper en mangeant 😶

Discovered in 1669, Pen Park Hole (underneath Filton Golf Course) is a cave system formed by the rise and fall of geothermal water. It measures 61 metres deep and 250 metres wide.
It is home to a rare species of cave shrimp - Niphargus kochianus, which thrives in the total darkness.

Hier, le monsieur de Padirac : "Les niphargus sont des sortes de crevettes qui vivent dans les grottes. Il y a peu de nourriture ici, mais elles peuvent rester 200 jours sans manger"

I would love to see Niphargus kochianus! (Having seen glenniei and aquilex). Do you know anyone that does sampling for them?

@UZH_Science faculty excursion "inside Switzerland" to Bergwerk Gonzen.
No more iron ore extraction, but #Niphargus all around. Life inside a limestone mountain, 600m below surface, #bacteria biofilm & groundwater #amphipods as simple foodweb.
#Biodiversity is amazing! 🗻⛏️🦐

I had to look up groundwater shrimp! Niphargus glenniei looks unlikely on the face of it, but yes it would be a confusing trip…
