#Nowcasts
Bajillionaires of the world, we don't need more employment growth nowcasts during the government shutdown.

But we do need a very-large-sample monthly survey of US households to determine employment / unemployment status.

Current problems mostly related to staff shortages. Some balloons aren’t getting launched. Some forecast offices can’t operate 24 hrs/day.

But, the real nightmare isn’t inaccurate weather forecasts. It’s going to be: “impossible nowcasts”. What’s a “nowcast”( glad you asked, read next thread…🧵
Did you check the weather forecast today? That forecast was built on a massive government-run network of sensors and computers.

Thanks to Trump, they are getting much, much worse.

Biden's policies made sure we avoided a recession and had a "soft landing" after Covid played havoc with the global economy

Now we are facing an increasing likelihood of a #Trumpcession because his policies suck

Is there really a last mile in inflation? Using Cleveland Fed nowcasts, here’s the picture for core PCE; bear in mind that lagged shelter is still exaggerating the numbers. That bump early this year looks like an aberration.

"minority government remains the best outcome [ALP] can hope for at the next election" - rubbish; polls are nowcasts not forecasts and do not predict elections that are months away.

U.S. Economy: While one nowcast (New York Fed) still indicates a growth rate of 2.3%, the two other nowcasts (Atlanta Fed, IMEN) currently point to considerably lower growth.

Take three "nowcasts": mine, @devolvedelections.bsky.social, and @ballotbox.scot, and the seat projections right now are in these ranges:

SNP: 63-64
Lab: 18
Ref: 17-18
Grn: 10-12
Con: 9-11
LD: 8-10

So a pretty strong consensus on a large SNP minority and pro-independence majority.
Final Scottish Parliament poll tracker of the year, before the Christmas holidays start in earnest. SNP projected one short of a majority.

Seats (+/- 2021):

SNP: 64 (-)
Lab: 18 (-4)
Ref: 18(+18)
Grn: 12 (+4)
Con: 9 (-22)
LD: 8 (+4)
Alba: 0 (-)

20 marginals: 16 SNP, 3 Labour, 1 Conservative.

My model for PCE price index data given CPI and PPI inputs has headline at 9.0% annualized in March thanks to energy prices surging. Core has been squirrely and hard to model of late but looks like 3.4% ann., would be the highest non-January (residual seasonality) print since September 2024.

Predicting is hard, especially the future and especially^2 in real time. The nowcasts are noisy and reality could turn out quite different.

But this decline means that, according to historical patterns, the signals coming in the last few business days are really bad.
