Cancer Research Malaysia has developed MeMoSA® (Mobile Mouth Screening Anywhere), a digital platform designed to bring oral cancer screening to underserved communities through a combination of telemedicine and artificial intelligence. The platform enables trained staff and volunteers to capture oral images using mobile devices, which are then reviewed remotely by dental specialists. MeMoSA® incorporates AI-supported image quality checks, underpinned by a dataset of over 30,000 clinically annotated oral mucosa images collected across five countries. This dataset, which includes lesion classifications and clinical diagnoses verified through biopsy or expert consensus, allows for the training of AI models to identify patterns associated with oral lesions. The platform functions as a screening support tool rather than a diagnostic system, aiming to identify individuals who may require further medical evaluation. MeMoSA® has been deployed through partnerships with public institutions, NGOs, and corporate organizations, including community outreach programs like Senyum Sihat and workplace initiatives such as Smile & Screen. The platform emphasizes data security and ethical compliance, aligning with Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and incorporating cybersecurity measures. By leveraging mobile technology and AI, MeMoSA® addresses the challenge of limited access to dental professionals in rural and underserved areas, enabling earlier referral and intervention. The initiative reflects a broader shift in healthcare delivery from centralized, facility-based care towards more distributed, technology-enabled models. Cancer Research Malaysia, led by CEO Andy Khoo and Senior MarComm Executive Dr. Shamini Rajamanikam, highlights the importance of such innovations in expanding access to care for populations underserved by existing healthcare infrastructure. The platform has evolved since its initial development in 2017, with ongoing iterations to improve functionality and user experience. MeMoSA® demonstrates how digital tools can bridge longstanding gaps in healthcare delivery, making early oral cancer screening more accessible beyond conventional clinical settings.
