How Narcissistic Abuse Shapes Self-Trust, Relationships and Complex Trauma
What happens when you grow up learning that someone else’s needs, emotions, or version of reality matter more than your own?In this episode, I’m joined by Amy Marlow-MaCoy, MEd, LPC, to talk about narcissistic abuse and its relationship to complex trauma. We unpack narcissistic family systems, gaslighting and DARVO, the roles children can take on in these families, and why survivors may struggle with self-trust, perfectionism, overfunctioning, guilt, and boundaries long after childhood. We also talk about what happens when you begin changing these patterns, the complexity of low and no contact, and what it can look like to rebuild a relationship with yourself after years of learning to question your own experience. About AmyAmy Marlow-MaCoy, MEd, LPC, is an internationally known clinician and trainer specializing in gaslighting, narcissistic abuse, and complex developmental and relational trauma. I believe it's called "resentful overfunctioning"

“You’re so strong” can sound like praise—until it becomes a prison.

Strength isn’t the problem. Overfunctioning is.

The Strong Woman Myth: Why Being “So Strong” Can Leave You Tired, Isolated, and Stuck
Have you ever been told “you’re so strong” and felt a heavy weight drop in your chest instead of a sense of pride? For so many women, being praised for handling everything has quietly turned from a compliment into an expectation—and eventually, a prison. If you are the person everyone depends on, the one who never falls apart and carries the emotional load for everyone else, you are not alone.

I think my anxiety stresses my husband out, not because I’m having a spike, but because I think he feels he doesn’t know what to do to help me through it, esp as mine manifests as overfunctioning until it isn’t

Hell, -I- don’t know what will help me through it consistently, so I’m not a lot of help
August 6, 2026 at 10:56 AM
It’s probably both good and bad that I feel the ramp up, spike, and then post-overfunctioning crash a lot faster now, days instead of weeks or months that lead to poor choices and the blockage of memories, but again, I don’t actually think that’s probably good. Better, maybe, but not -good-.

One thing I’ll say about therapy is that I can absolutely recognize my need to exercise control via overfunctioning during anxiety spikes.

I’m absolute shit at managing it and have only started to truly recognize it in the moment (or closer to onset at least) but hey I’m getting there

Just realized Anti-Hero is not about romantic abandonment, it's about the fear of being abandoned by her fans and no longer having any purpose in life because songwriting is more important to her than anything else.

An anthem for every overfunctioning people pleaser with imposter syndrome.

When you're bone-weary, two sentences feel identical.

"The organization depends on me" is true, and measurable.

"I am personally responsible for the organization" is the overfunctioning talking.

Why does a job you are visibly good at cost you so much, and why does everything wobble the week you step back from it?

@mostlymartha.bsky.social , I really want to know how this intersects with emotional labor and overfunctioning and burnout and perimenopause.
INDEED.

And I can't quite believe this getting stirred up so hard right now, when middle-aged women are finally getting ADHD diagnoses, is entirely coincidental.
I mean...people have been saying that ADHD is a myth for...decades? This one has been a long time in the making, even if most of you ignored it this whole time, sorry.

It’s days like these, when I feel compelled to tackle projects & can’t seemingly stop, that I invariably in retrospect twig as a clear sign of overfunctioning. At the same time, sometimes you just have to Get Shit Done & it isn’t always driven by overfunctioning.

Some people keep busy because they're thriving. Others because stillness is where the uncomfortable stuff surfaces. Overfunctioning looks like competence but works like avoidance. If you can't stop — worth being curious.

The Life That Survival Built
I was raised to be an overfunctioner. Rural settings, constant moves, and instability created a parentified child who grew into a hyper-empathetic, overfunctioning adult. In every relationship and every career setting, I showed up as the door prize…the unexpected dynamo who quietly won everyone over. “I just want to be a receptionist,” a partner teased me in a sing-song voice when, two years later, I was managing Human Resources.

What about the extreme burnout following years of overfunctioning?

Me: how did this happen?

Tiny neuroaffirming orange vest clearing the ableism from my brain: boss, we went through this back in your 20's, remember?
July 20, 2026 at 4:04 PM
But do you ever ask yourself how much your chronic overfunctioning is costing the people you love?

Not just your exhaustion—but their opportunities to grow, accomplish, and feel good about themselves?
