Prostredníctvom štúdia dávnych geologických vrstiev a fosílií môžeme pochopiť mechanizmy klimatických zmien a predpovedať možné scenáre budúcnosti. ## Paleocén-eocénske tepelné maximum (PETM): Pohľad do pravej minulosti Pred 56 miliónmi rokov, počas prechodu z paleocénu do eocénu, zažila Zem obrovský nárast teploty. Oceánske vody blízko Antarktídy dosiahli teplotu okolo 17 °C a v blízkosti ekvátora až 32 °C – teplota príjemného kúpania! ### This post is for subscribers only Become a member to get access to all content Subscribe now

Paleoclimatological Analogues and the PETM Metric The Hothouse Baseline: Temperatures of the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum To evaluate the extreme upper boundary of Earth's thermal history within the era of complex life, paleoclimatologists examine the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), which occurred approximately 56 million years ago. During this window, massive carbon injection—likely triggered by volcanic activity and methane hydrate destabilization—pushed the planet into a true "Hothouse Earth" regime. Global average surface temperatures reached to , roughly to warmer than the pre-industrial baseline. The equator-to-pole thermal gradient flattened drastically: summer temperatures in the Arctic ocean hovered around , and high-latitude landmasses experienced humid, ice-free subtropical conditions.

“At 3*c of warming, which on our current trajectory is the second half of this century, Permafrost emissions on their own will rival the PETM emissions, and that means that permafrost emissions ON THEIR OWN are more than enough to repeat a continuous temperature rise.”

My thanks to Bruce Scofield for sharing his 2013 paper. It caused me to fix an error I had made in the bottom right graph as to the timing of the PETM. Early data had listed 55mya. When data showed 56mya I did an edit - to the wrong digit. Past posts now deleted.

100s of years is a bit optimistic. The PETM took 70-100,000 years to return to stability, and we're forcing the system 10x faster than that event 🤯

the PETM (Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum). There has been relabeling of all sort of geological time periods, so I wish that there would be some agreement in the paleoclimate community to abandon the completely inappropriate and value-laded "optimum" terminology, in favor of "... Thermal Maximum"

The mid Miocene is nowhere where close to being a thermal maximum of the tertiary. Only the Early Eocene comes close

The PETM was relatively short- perhaps driven by something abrupt- setting it apart from the longer time-wise climatic optimums that coincide w higher co2

Most prefer MMCO to MMTM
