It’s great that some of the “big names” in paleoanth are finally starting to talk about this, but there are many ECRs who have been trying to decolonize paleoanthropology for a while now.

A #Neanderthal once thought "What a cool stone! It'll make a neat handaxe!" Not in those exact words, probably...🧪🏺

#HumanEvolution #PaleoAnth #science
The echinoid fossil in this 400,000 year old handaxe from Swanscombe, Kent, had quite a journey.
Living over 65 million years ago it survived Cretaceous seas, fossilisation, Ice Age rivers, Neanderthal culture, more rivers, & quarrying to enter our scientific record.

We don't talk about this enough but the history of #PaleoAnth has "colonial overtones" - to put it lightly! Chapeau to all efforts to decolonise #HumanEvolution 👏

The Palestinian 🇵🇸 women achaeologists and fieldworkers who worked at the excavation of - and recognised - the Tabun 1 #Neanderthal skull! I'm an anthropologist, I didn't know! It's crucial to highlight the story of the people behind discoveries!

🏺 The first remains of Tabun 1 were recognised by Yusra, a Palestinian woman who had already dug for years with Garrod. Here is Yusra in 1932 with other young women fieldworkers named as Rashidi and Amui Haj, and in 1934 with Dorothy Garrod.

Une analyse suggère que les vestiges d’Homo naledi retrouvés en Afrique du Sud appartiennent uniquement à des individus féminins.

Are any #BioAnthsky / #Anthrosky folks writing about how the changing landscapes of #anthropology training, funding, & career paths will affect #BioAnth theory & knowledge production in the future?

My Google scholar search isn’t going well.

A glimpse into Neanderthals' diet, technology, culture and their relationship with their environment! New evidence suggests that #Neanderthals knew how to extract fat from bones 🦴 around 125k years ago!

Neanderthals boiled bones in ‘fat factories’ to enrich their lean diet
Germany digs reveal a large-scale operation 100,000 years earlier than oldest known fat rendering by modern humans.

So cool! Sundaland's sea level variations likely played a role in Pleistocene hominin dispersal, isolation and diversity in SE Asia 🌏. It was about time we found hominins in the submerged shelf! So much fossil evidence may still lurk underwater! 🦴🦷💀🪨
