Do you want to read a fun but hefty debate on azhdarchid pterosaur palaeobiology between Witton & Naish and David Peters? It's from 2013 but I just had reason to re-read it... journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...
A Reappraisal of Azhdarchid Pterosaur Functional Morphology and Paleoecology
Azhdarchid pterosaurs were among the most widespread and successful of pterosaur clades, but their paleoecology remains controversial. Morphological features common to all azhdarchids include a long, ...

This semester, my paleoecology students are working on species recovery plans for extinct species from the fossil record (I gave them a list to choose from), and my approach of "only assign things you'll actually enjoy grading" continues to be paying dividends.

Found and dug up dinosaurs in the dusty desert? Done it. Fossil plants and paleoecology? Wrote a book on them. Flirty contrarian who looks good in leather or open-shirted? Check.

I did something new in my writing-intensive Paleoecology capstone this year: I'm making them read books. I gave them a list of books to choose from, and they turn in reflections on the material and also the writing.

It has been a joy to watch these students discover a love of reading nonfiction.
Cannot tell you how depressing it is to read that people are simply refusing to read nonfiction after you’ve worked really hard to write a nonfiction book you believe in, in case anyone is wondering why I’m posting so much about my book which comes out in a few weeks #BookSky

I get the appeal of using more and more complex methodologies to do paleontology/paleoecology, but 20 years from now when we're all doing "quantum paleoecology," it'll still be important to know how to identify a fossil. We need both, but I fear that our discipline is only prioritizing the former.

Overall, I was really anticipating this as a game-changing documentary on Cenozoic paleoecology, and it did NOT hold up. But it was nice to see some cool fossil animals, so I'll rate it a solid 2.8 stars.
