A pelorus looks similar to a compass, but it doesn’t actually show directions. It is a simple, effective tool which is used to determine the bearing of a landmark or celestial body relative to the ship’s heading.

Not an orca, but a dolphin: Pelorus Jack. He guided ships through a tricky pass near New Zealand. One ship's captain took a shot at him, and he never helped that ship again. It later shipwrecked -- karma.

I swear, animals are MUCH smarter than we even know.
