Architectural History: The Stairs of Sommerarena Baden 🏛️

The monumental staircase leading up to the Sommerarena in Baden bei Wien. The first summer theatre on this site was erected in 1841 as a roofless wooden structure by director Franz Pokorny.

I'm mesmerized by this striking, ominous historical photo & by its photographer's story. I remember watching the eruption on the news.

The eruption of Mount St. Helens, seen shortly after 8:32 am Sunday, 18 May 1980, probably along the forest roads of Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

The photographer, Richard Lasher, survived the eruption that killed approximately 57 others.

#31daysofgraves Day 12 notable women. A famous face in an unmarked grave. Portraits of Elizabeth Johnston(e) Hall (1822-1901) hang in every major photographic collection in the world, but she is buried in a common grave in Warriston. #Edinburgh #PhotoHistory #HillAndAdamson #NewhavenFishwives 1/2

Hall, a Newhaven Fishwife, was photographed by pioneering photographers David Octavius Hill & Robert Adamson c.1843-47. We have an ongoing project to mark her burial place more appropriately. #Edinburgh #PhotoHistory #HillAndAdamson #NewhavenFishwives #Newhaven #31daysofgraves 2/2

If you've ever puzzled over the old standard portrait photographers' exclamation "Watch the birdie!" this object holds part of the answer.

Today, I learned about two photographers of Japanese heritage that I was previously unaware of working in Alaska, thanks to BlueSky. Love this platform. #photohistory
Seiki Kayamori (1877-1941) was a Japanese amateur photographer who moved to Yakutat in 1912. After Pearl Harbor attack, local soldiers beat him thinking he was a spy. Kayamori then committed suicide before internment or worse. He was buried in an unmarked, now lost grave. #alaskahistory #alaska
