Some parts of Mars really do change a lot between images.

Here are 2 CTX images of exactly the same region taken about 7 years apart (Dec 2007 - Jan 2015).

Lots of dust devil tracks, and wind streaks. But also, a new impact crater.

A great #PlanetaryScience animation!
Allow me to introduce myself on here! I'm a planetary scientist/astronomer at the University of Reading (UK), researching Jupiter & Saturn. I've worked at JAXA, NASA, Boston Uni and Uni of Leicester. On the side, I create space animations to share the wonders of our corner of the universe, such as:

Yay! Parker Solar Probe survived! 🪐🔭🧪 #PlanetaryScience
NASA just confirmed the Parker Solar Probe survived its closest ever passage of the Sun!

Beacon tone was received last night 🟢

We'll start getting data from the historic flyby on 1 January.

Star gazers in ancient Mesopotamia focused on recurring stuff like planetary motion, but sometimes they wrote about meteors.

Watching from Babylon, one wrote: “Night of the 7th, last part of the night, a meteor which was very bright in the middle of the sky” oracc.museum.upenn.edu//adsd/adart1...

A plot of 2,108 potentially hazardous asteroids (diameter >= 140m, 19LD minimum orbit intersection distance wrt Earth). There are currently 2,479 known, which is ~40% of the estimated population. We turn up a few new PHAs per month across the sky surveys.

New article by the Bard of Planetary Defense! :)

🔭🧪#PlanetaryScience
NEW: It’s hard to know what’s going to happen to NASA under the new administration. But one aspect of America’s space program that has long had widespread support from both Democrats and Republicans is planetary defense.

Hopefully, that stays true.

It’s Not Sci-Fi: Americans Support Asteroid Defense Spending
In the United States, funding for planetary defense has long had strong bipartisan support both inside and outside of Congress.

NEW: We all know JWST is a marvel of a machine that can gaze at incredibly distant stars. But I didn’t expect it be able to spy – almost by accident – small-but-hazardously sized asteroids in our backyard!

What a show off.

The Kuiper Belt contains the frozen leftovers of the formation of our Solar System. Using ALMA astronomers can observe similar belts around other stars, and they come in all shapes and sizes! What do they tell us about the formation of planetary systems?
