I think tropes and clichés are useful tools to solve plotproblems and/or play with expectations, but a lot of these trope-criticism seems to feel using a trope is a mistake. Tropes are usually genre signifiers; I don't want a tropeless horror film. I want them to play in the horror space with ideas.

From the character's perspective the choices they make when confronted with a situation is important. If they run to avoid something bad, some other type of bad maybe worse will happen. Their choices 'fail' to solve for the underlying problems.

After you have written for a long time you will recognize when you need to step away from a plot issue in a big novel. A few days or weeks or longer may be required for your big back brain to navigate plot solution options. That's part of writing a novel.

When you are story writing your brain is working in the background solving for plot. Sometimes this background plotting is fast but often it takes time. Create gaps where the front of your brain is doing something else and not pressuring the plotting brain.
