We did a concept assessment pretest/posttest when I started teaching intro genetics, and, to our great horror, performance on the pop gen-y question decreased on the posttest! We hypothesized that before the class, students reasoned through the question, and after, they tried to pattern match HW :/

Fadeout of cognitive training remains one of the more replicable
findings in psychology in this preregistered study of 300 preschool children. Well-done study with a 4 year follow up. The language gains either faded or the control group caught up.

It has even now been studied in a clinical trial with demonstrated benefits on blood pressure and heart rate for these patients. It is also just an extra measure of care that reminds me of the humanity and compassion humans are capable of. Always makes me smile.

One note just from looking at the abstract of the paper you linked: it sounds like the estimand of interest is "differences between groups in the amount of change from pre-test to post-test" that is *not* the same as the effect of group membership on the outcome at posttest,>

Det einaste signifikante resultatet dei kunne hoste opp, var følgjande: Gutane i eksperimentgruppa hadde signifikant høgare score på ein av fire indikatorar på posttest samanlikna med pretest.

ALLE andre kombinasjonar av utval (gutar, jenter, alle) og indikatorar gav ikkje-signifikante resultat.

>10 = large
5-10 = moderate
2-5 = small but sometimes important

Results from a(n apparently difficult) 21-item pretest-posttest containing Polish history & Holocaust history from my new interdisciplinary Portraits of Holocaust Violence course. 37% correct to 58% correct, d=1.68. Cool; I'll take it.
