It's got more iron that beef and as mince it is top notch! It makes a marvelous 'potjie' on the braai, slow cooked in an iron pot on a few flames

Second day of Autumn and last day of this year’s Thursday Canary Wharf Lunch Market
Today we shared:
Potjie Man (Cape Malay) lamb, delicious
Soffrito (Italian) mix of four, all good but the chicken and the pork best
They will both have stalls elsewhere, but no longer a half-hour walk from us 😔

A good friend of mine invited me and the wife to a fantasy LARP that he is arranging and there is a chance I get to be the main cook of the whole thing which I feel very honored about

I am however going to have to get a 2x bigger Potjie than I intended to get if I am going to feed everyone

2/2 I got my dogs favourite shoulders whilst i was there and treated them to a pack of really meaty Ostrich neck too (hmmmm, ostrich potjie also sounds good......)
It keeps them busy and away from herding the mower and weedeater!
Plus they all need and enjoy a good old chew!

We bought a potjie, pronounced poi-kee. It's a South African cast iron cooking cauldron.
It's used to make potjiekos, a small pot meal.
This pot is a size 3 which means if you fill it to the first ring it will feed 3 people. Second ring will feed 6, etc.

Afval (tripe) potjie (pot). Basically sheep stomach stew. Some tripe is pretty good actually (like oxtail, shanks, tongue etc.). But there is nothing like being in the house while my mom cooked sheep stomach in preparation to make this stew variant. Smelled so bad..🤢
What's the worst food from *your* cuisine? None of that "oh, one region over they eat some awful shit." Remove the beam from your own eye.

And I'm calling dibs on aspic, so you can't pick that one. My mom threatened to make it for me the other day.

I helped my neighbours move an old wood-burning stove. To be used for an afval potjie later today 🔥

Way ahead of the curve; I've got two Potjie pots, a #3 & a #6. Great way to cook neck meat & shins though most of the recipes I have require wine. I've got about 45 lbs of hulled oats too, groats are way better than quick oats. Takes an hour to cook mind you, & some milk, b.sugar & cinnamon is nice.

Pronouncing potjie as "poy-kee-ey". I caaaaan't.

If I can ever afford getting audiobooks made of my books, I'm getting South African narrators, even if that'll make the process more complicated and expensive.
