I helped my neighbours move an old wood-burning stove. To be used for an afval potjie later today 🔥

My Boxing Day potjie Breyani was a gosh darned triumph I tell ya, and is in serious danger of being promoted to a tradition.

Second day of Autumn and last day of this year’s Thursday Canary Wharf Lunch Market
Today we shared:
Potjie Man (Cape Malay) lamb, delicious
Soffrito (Italian) mix of four, all good but the chicken and the pork best
They will both have stalls elsewhere, but no longer a half-hour walk from us 😔

I can't justify this purchase because I already have a potjie pot that's fairly similar.............. or can I?

Pronouncing potjie as "poy-kee-ey". I caaaaan't.

If I can ever afford getting audiobooks made of my books, I'm getting South African narrators, even if that'll make the process more complicated and expensive.

We bought a potjie, pronounced poi-kee. It's a South African cast iron cooking cauldron.
It's used to make potjiekos, a small pot meal.
This pot is a size 3 which means if you fill it to the first ring it will feed 3 people. Second ring will feed 6, etc.

Afval (tripe) potjie (pot). Basically sheep stomach stew. Some tripe is pretty good actually (like oxtail, shanks, tongue etc.). But there is nothing like being in the house while my mom cooked sheep stomach in preparation to make this stew variant. Smelled so bad..🤢
What's the worst food from *your* cuisine? None of that "oh, one region over they eat some awful shit." Remove the beam from your own eye.

And I'm calling dibs on aspic, so you can't pick that one. My mom threatened to make it for me the other day.

Short rib is one of my favourite cuts of beef: it’s cheap and flavourful with superb texture, ideal for the art of the potjie and all the time and chilling that goes with that.
WHAT’S COOKING: Beef shortrib potjie, Italian style

I'm more of a mutton potjie / stew person myself, but well-prepared lambribs and skaapstertjies also hit the spot for me!

And in the US - a Dutch Oven (which also has other connotations 😱)

In South Africa, the version you use on an open fire is a Potjie 😎

Am sure the house smells fab!

Got some bloody lovely biltong and hot sauce from a shop with this poster. Is there a big South African community on the Isle of Man or am I pattern matching too close to the wind?

The only reason I say that. Is now I have done it. It felt a bit like NZ hangi or potjie? Dunno.
Happy to be informed.

Regularly use one in the oven. And a Saffer potjie is very much part of our cultural heritage.
