#Queernormative
With the insanity running around these days?

All of my books are getting yanked from the shelves: Queernormative, anti-authority, queer marriage/couples, rebellion against corruption, powerful females, compassionate males...you get the idea.

Some worlds in the setting are completely accepting. Others are not. Part of it is modern day Oregon - Paxton is a more diverse, left-leaning mirror of my own disgustingly red hometown. The narrative itself is very queernormative.

One of many reasons I prefer writing in the fantasy/paranormal genres is that my worlds are entirely queernormative. The real world is on fire, so may as well enjoy the escape into somewhere better, right? 🫠

September 29, 2026 at 10:35 PM
for me, the latter: a queernormative world is a world where queerphobia (whatever form that may take here) is not an element, but queerness is.

that said I can see books with queer characters (even if they are not accepted) being described as queernorm, I think this is reader perspective
September 29, 2026 at 9:15 PM
But I also don't think being free from bigotry is necessarily a requirement. A world can still be queernormative (IMO) if it accepts some forms of queerness completely but struggles with others, or if it's pitted against other groups/societies where queerness is less normal.
September 29, 2026 at 9:04 PM
Closer to the latter. To me, queernormative worlds are ones where a whole bunch of people are (what we would think of as) queer but also nobody comments on it or views it as being different in any way from "normal."

The Preservation society from the Murderbot books is a good example.
September 29, 2026 at 9:02 PM
For me, queernormative is queer identity being treated as a neutral way of being in the world, no better or less than cishet identities.
September 29, 2026 at 9:00 PM
Queernormative for me means "queerness is as unremarkable in this society as heterosexuality".
September 29, 2026 at 8:34 PM
I think of 'queernormative world' as a world where queerness is presumed, though the details abt one's queerness are not. I think I read 'The Dragon Has Some Complaints' as QNW b/c it has several kinds of QN cultures, vs just one overarching idea of queernormativity.
September 29, 2026 at 8:33 PM
Queernormative I think pretty uncomplicatedly means "queerness is not an axis of bigotry".

A world where queerness exists just means "plausible worldbuilding". (& I think we do better for a literary scene which has books that centre queer characters in both contexts)
When you hear "queernormative world" do you think of a book where everyone knows queerness exists, or one where queer existence is not met with bigotry? Or something else?
September 29, 2026 at 8:00 PM
idk if I think 'queernormative' is a useful descriptor of a setting, necessarily? I think it's better applied to stories, because a story set in the real world with a 100% LGBT cast can read as queernormative even if the world around them is...well, like this
September 29, 2026 at 7:41 PM
And that's also why I *don't* described my stuff as queernormative, because I don't want people to get blindsided when my characters do face prejudice (even if it's less prejudice than a lot of times and places in our world, it's still there and thus it's not a queernormative world)
September 29, 2026 at 7:01 PM
This might not necessarily be a positive thing. By the above definition Classical Athens might well have been queernormative and that society had sexism ingrained in it in a way that makes the Taliban jealous.
September 29, 2026 at 6:55 PM
For me a queernormative world is a world where being queer is the norm. As in, it's assumed that most people are, one way or another, whether it's through gender identity or sexual orientation or combination there-off or anything else, queer.
September 29, 2026 at 6:55 PM
(I've now sent myself down a personal rabbithole because I initially typed 'unremarked on' but I think a queernormative setting still allows for e.g. coming out, ceremonies, choosing how you identify and changing that, celebrating that, but without angst or pushback?)
September 29, 2026 at 6:52 PM
E.g. Murderbot and Wayfarers series are queernormative but if there was a planet/city somewhere in the whole setting that had different norms, given size of setting that wouldn't necessarily take me out of it. But POV characters and associates live in a world where queerness is norm.
September 29, 2026 at 6:52 PM
in my mind, "queernormative" means people are queer and that's not unusual or unexpected in any way
