#Queernormative
When you hear "queernormative world" do you think of a book where everyone knows queerness exists, or one where queer existence is not met with bigotry? Or something else?

in my mind, "queernormative" means people are queer and that's not unusual or unexpected in any way

This book has delightful ace rep in a queernormative world. Check it out!
Hi, hello!

If you're landing here because you're looking for Canadian writers, then my two works I'd recommend are:

1) BAKER THIEF if you want novels, for the massive Quebec City inspiration behind the setting.

(1/2)
Baker Thief by Claudie Arseneault
Baker by day, thief by night, Claire must save her twin before she gets captured by her cute investigator customer.

Let's see.. Queer romance, being queernormative, use of drugs and cannabis, the main characters being gay/pan/bi, and strong sexual content.

The story is queernormative, but I write urban fantasy set in pre-COVID Japan, so the world isn't queernormative. It is irrelevant in the Shadowland.

if a setting has patrilineal bloodline inheritance it is already not queernormative and the author is lying if they claim that it is

I think queernormative for me suggests a world where queerness is almost completely unremarkable - marriages between folks of any gender are common, folks switching genders isn't worth commenting on, nobody expects marriages to be consummated/romantic relationships to have a sexual element, etc

I tend to write stories where the world is similar to this one, which of course isn't queernormative, but for Paranormal Activity Club I wanted to try out a queernormative world.

Once I removed the pressure to be straight and cis, most of the characters became queer. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Fun Fact: If you create a Queernormative enviroment you never have to explain it Gay just exists.
I mean, how embarrassing for the person who thinks this is DIFFICULT or COMPLICATED.

“Some mommies love mommies instead of daddies and some daddies love daddies instead of mommies and some adults love all kinds of adults.”There. Yer done. Your pathetic social ignorance is fixed, ok?
always so funny to me when people are like “how am I supposed to explain Gay to my kids?” my kid asks me way harder shit all the time. “why did they build the road this way? why are some people bad?” I don’t know. please ask me about Gay

I ask because The Dragon Has Some Complaints has been called queernormative a few times now. And while there are many queer characters who accept each other, they explicitly haven't always found acceptance. They're building something better for each other.

one of the village teenagers stopped by yesterday and we were chatting books so here is my semiannual plug for @melissacaruso.bsky.social, who writes not young adult but YA accessible historic fantasy with a queernormative world that doesn’t do gendered violence. in case you are needing that rn

Love queernormative worlds!
September 30, 2026 at 6:55 PM
to me, a queernormative world is a world where queer relationships are of equal respect in the eyes of the populace as straight relationships and are absolutely unremarkable for their existence.

Other common features of my writing...

• wlw/sapphic love
• messy grimy violence
• banter
• queernormative societies
• cishet male villains
• vampire
• mythology references
• public domain assets
Okay #WritingCommunity, what is a gift you give to yourself in your writing? What tropes or details or motifs do you use simply because you love them?

I love the tiny badass woman trope. I include the trope all the time.

I also love roses, and include them frequently as symbols and motifs.

Second question: are your worlds queernormative or heteronormative? Are there expectations for what a 'normal' or 'typical' relationship looks like?

With the insanity running around these days?

All of my books are getting yanked from the shelves: Queernormative, anti-authority, queer marriage/couples, rebellion against corruption, powerful females, compassionate males...you get the idea.

begging you all to stop with this narrative. please stop, please let go of the prelapsarian golden age of gender-sexual utopia. it's fine if you want to subvert and revise ancient stories to make them gay but claiming it was, in actual history, a queernormative society is whitewashing rape culture

As queernormative as the real world gets. It’s a brutal place full of prejudice and pain. No way sugarcoating that.

if a setting assigns a binary sex at birth and raises children differently based on the sexing of their body it is not queernormative and the author is lying if they claim that it is

I designed Ossedei to be queernormative and sex positive by default. And I love writing romance in a world where love is love.
Sometimes it's a character unto itself in a romance!

We have subgenre prompts coming up where we can chat more broadly about types of settings, so for now I would love to hear about your *specific* setting and why it's fun/interesting to write a romance in 🧡
