Peel Regional Police have announced the results of a major retail theft operation targeting Brampton and Mississauga stores. Known as Project Filcher, the initiative was launched after officers in 12 Division observed a sharp rise in shoplifting in 2025. The investigation focused on repeat offenders who were targeting the same businesses, including Nike, Walmart, LCBO, Winners, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Rexall. Between February 6 and April 16, officers conducted concentrated surveillance and enforcement, leading to 65 arrests and 545 criminal charges. In addition, 356 cases were solved and 20 arrest warrants issued. The thefts are estimated to have caused over $256,000 in losses. Some individual stores experienced frequent thefts, with one Nike location reporting 266 incidents over six months, while a Walmart store had 41 since opening last year. LCBO locations reported 556 thefts, amounting to $173,000 in losses, with 106 prolific offenders identified. Deputy Chief Marc Andrews emphasized that organized retail theft is far from a victimless crime, increasing costs and threatening public safety. Retail theft charges in the region rose from 522 in the first quarter of 2024 to 1,300 in 2026, with arrests increasing from 223 to 752. Ontario’s Solicitor General, Michael Kerzner, highlighted the importance of holding repeat offenders accountable and supporting police efforts to safeguard communities. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities anticipate further arrests.
