My son had an ophthalmology eval today. He’s legally blind with a long history of eye issues including retinopathy of prematurity, and bilateral cataract removal at only 13.
He now needs lens implants to save his vision.
Our worst fear though?
Not having insurance for surgery.

I was raised in Orange County by my mom, a single parent losing her vision to diabetic retinopathy. She couldn't work as a nurse anymore, so money was always scarce, but we got by. She had an affordable health insurance plan with a company called FHP, based out of Fountain Valley.

What a repulsive man.
I had eye problems. Everything from routine cataract surgery and laser work for retinopathy in both eyes, to a vitrectomy.
Some of the surgeons and nurses didn't have flawless English.
But as they were busy saving my eyesight, it would have seemed churlish to whine about it...

This is more existential than unhinged, but when I finally got a diagnosis on a central serous retinopathy a few years ago, I asked "Why now?" the ophthalmologist said, with a serious but wistful sigh, "Bodies are strange. The world is a strange and mysterious place."

My father was an endocrinologist specializing in diabetes, partly because his mom went blind from DM retinopathy. He came to the US for training & cared for many patients in his practice. He used every tool including the bully pulpit. He also revered science & dreamed of cures he would never see.
As the parent of a type-I diabetic, I would like to invite the ignorant piece of shit currently directing the FDA to kiss my ass.

I’m a type 1 diabetic I live on SSI and Medicare I also have a bulging disc, diabetic neoropathy, diabetic retinopathy my meds are extremely expensive how would I survive without these programs! Answer I wouldn’t!

Had my 'diabetic' health check, which will hopefully result in my records being changed to not diabetic, and retinopathy screening won't keep hassling me. I got to listen to my feet's heartbeat! I hope they're not pregnant.

Good news! I don't have to go for another diabetic retinopathy test for two years.
Diabetic retinopathy this morning with drops in the eyes which enlarge the pupils and make me look as high as a kite or after drinking 28 cans of Monster.
"It will last four hours," they say. Six hours later I still can't drive and stairs are taken with care.
Blood sugar is nearly normal too! 🤷♂️

'Scientific Reports' is inordinately fond of papermill products in a 'retinopathy diagnosis through AI' style - I guess the mill installed editors in the system, to ensure that they're reviewed by other mill sockpuppets. Even so, this was more annoying than most.

'Scientific Reports' is inordinately fond of papermill products in a 'retinopathy diagnosis through AI' style - I guess the mill installed editors in the system, to ensure that they're reviewed by other mill sockpuppets. Even so, this was more annoying than most.
