I hate the word "franchise". Tolkien, or Lee/Kirby/Ditko, or Lucas or Roddenbery or some fucking geniuses created entire universes and they got so profitable that even those of us who were enchanted by them describe them like a burger business that can afford more than one shop.

We're no longer capable of making Star Trek the way Roddenbery imagined. The ideals are too far out of reach. We're going back to the ideology of the Steam Age and Imperialism, except with lasers and computers and other destructive technology. The future is the past.

Absolutely - and while Quark and Nog don't do themselves any favours, I suspect Gene Roddenbery was spinning in his grave that its hard to characterize how Sisko and others talk about Ferengi as anything less than everyday Federation racism.

People may disagree but I actually think Deep Space Nine may ironically be *the* most hopecore series. It eschews the early Roddenbery utopian view in the events that take place, but the protagonists wrestle with, and often overcome, questions of morality in a more human way than other series.
