Seems to me that NATO should start thinking about having a European SACEUR. The SACEUR is always an American but that creates a huge vulnerability given that a US President hostile to NATO can issue binding orders to that SACEUR. In a crisis or war, NATO could end up paralyzed. Or am I wrong here?

Seems to me that NATO should start thinking about having a European SACEUR. The SACEUR is always an American but that creates a huge vulnerability given that a US President hostile to NATO can issue binding orders to that SACEUR. In a crisis or war, NATO could end up paralyzed. Or am I wrong here?

I suspect she would reduce it quietly. The other long standing policy to withdraw from NATO would not happen until the war in Ukraine ended. The fascists have never been clear if they would withdraw completely or go back to the DeGaulle era of being in NATO politically but not under SACEUR command.

Today the US Ambassador to NATO suggested that Germany should provide the next SACEUR. Funny thing, I wrote about that last March.

I agree with Minna…she’s smart and she’s right. Ukraine should not take a bad deal that doesnt meet their interests. They are actually winning on the battlefield, according to SACEUR Cavoli’s testimony in front of HASC and SASC…and the Russians will never live up to any agreement unless compelled.
Nobody can in good faith recommend Ukraine to take the ”deal” proposed by the US.
