Skelligs

Looking across at the Iveragh Peninsula, the islands of Deenish, Scariff, and the Skelligs, a mass of wheeling gannets drew our attention to a darker patch of sea.

With a monocular, I saw the surface, boiling with bubbles, breached by a whale, likely humpback.

What a wonderful planet we live on.

Countdown to St. Patrick's Day. This is Little Skellig viewed from Skellig Michael. Sceilg Mhichíl is a UNESCO World Heritage site...there are only two in the Republic of Ireland. Only 180 people per day are allowed to visit the Skelligs. Tours are possible between mid-May and September.

The Skelligs was also given as a location by the Irish state to Disney at no cost, out of their belief that some nebulous 'good will' was more useful than a big bag of American cash. Disney was very quick to agree.
She facilitated two weeks of filming on Skellig Michael for the Star Wars movies, during the height of the breeding season for the resident seabirds, despite objections from An Taisce and other environmental groups. Chicks from vulnerable species were blown into the sea by helicopter #spéirgorm 5/n

After 15 years+ seeing the Skelligs from my bedroom window in Beara, I recently went for the first time.

WHAT an experience: the remoteness, the sheer stone peaks towering straight up out of the ocean, the seabird colonies, the history ...

There truly is nowhere else like it on Earth.

As some of you have probably guessed, I got to visit the Skelligs over the weekend.
While seeing the puffins on Skellig Michael was obviously incredible, I found the gannet colony on Skellig Beag particularly moving.
Hear me out and I'll share more puffin pics below #spéirgorm

Excellent in principle but with mild Ivereagh Peninsula denialism. Don't miss Cahersiveen (fish and chips at QCs, ringforts 2 miles from town), or the food at Renards Point). Drive to Valentia to see the first transatlantic cable. Skelligs chocolate for the kids and island itself (beware heavy seas)
New, from me:
Everything seems awful, but Co. Kerry, Ireland is great. A photo essay on what to do if you visit (especially for Killarney and Dingle). Replies are open, so please add your own suggestions.
