#ScrewPile
Janna and Seb Laan Lomas calculate that their screw pile foundation system has 70% less embodied carbon than a traditional concrete slab. And at the end of the life cycle it can be used again. Nice.

These are the type of lighthouses you would see around the Chesapeake Bay, they’re called “Screwpile Lighthouses” This one called the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, built in 1879, is one of the few surviving Screwpile lighthouses out there. This lighthouse is originally located from Bloodsworth Island.

By contrast, Parker's second posting, the Killock Shoal Lighthouse, is no more. A cottage-style screwpile lighthouse built on the #Chesapeake Bay near #Chincoteague, Virginia, in 1886, it was demolished in 1939 and replaced with a metal tower.

The light was automated and destaffed in 1954, and shortly thereafter the US Coast Guard embarked on a campaign of burning or otherwise demolishing the bay's screwpile lighthouses and replacing them with purely functional skeleton towers.

The Hooper Strait Lighthouse avoided this fate in 1966 when the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in the town of St. Michaels acquired it and shipped it to its current location at the museum, where it stands to this day. It is one of only a very few of the bay's screwpile lighthouses remaining.

Built in 1879, this was one of the many screwpile lighthouses erected in the 1800s to guide ships through the twists and turns of the Chesapeake Bay and the waterways that feed in to it. It is a hexagonal cottage-style lighthouse prefabricated in Baltimore and shipped to Hooper Strait.
