D-Day veteran Henry Rice dies aged 100 after lifelong commitment to remembrance
Henry Rice, a Second World War Royal Navy veteran from Cranleigh, Surrey, has died at the age of 100. Rice served as a signaller aboard HMS Eastway, a vessel that transported Allied troops and equipment to Normandy during the 1944 D-Day campaign. Although he arrived off Juno Beach five days after the initial landings, he played a part in the operation and was later awarded France’s Legion d’Honneur for his wartime service. The Spirit of Normandy Trust, a charity supporting veterans’ welfare, announced his death and described him as a “great character with a cheeky smile”. It also praised his dedication to honouring those who went to war and never returned. In June, Rice travelled to France with other veterans to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy landings. There, he shared his memories with French schoolchildren alongside fellow Normandy veteran Ken Hay, who died the previous month aged 101. Rice believed strongly in educating younger generations about the realities of war, arguing that public awareness could help prevent future conflict. After the Normandy campaign, he served in the Mediterranean and the Far East. Following the war, he worked on cruise ships and later joined his local fire service. In later life, he regularly attended remembrance events in the United Kingdom. In May 2025, during commemorations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, he gave Queen Camilla the final ceramic poppy to be placed at the Tower of London. The Trust said Rice represented fellow veterans with dignity and would be greatly missed.
