#Sequelae
Well, I had to look it up, and I was struck by how you can play a pervy, little game with the robot voice if you like the way she says something.

"Sequelae."

"Ooh! Say it again, but slower. Like you mean it..."

The studies you've published are not just eye opening, they're frightening. The anti-vax public remains stalwart in their delusional beliefs that somehow getting COVID is like the flu. We are now seeing evidence that COVID's sequelae can be a lifetime of disability.

They remain hopeful because they are children. If they get to become adults, especially those who will continue to suffer from the sequelae and they’ll have lost all hope with their lives and health. 😢😢😢

University of Helsinki researchers studied 218 people and found elevated oral inflammatory proteins MMP-8, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 in Long COVID.

Findings suggest persistent inflammation and altered tissue breakdown, detectable through a simple mouth rinse.

My screenshot is of the post made in r/Meirl of the Tweet (described above), showing that it has 21k upvotes and 2.8k comments... none about Long COVID or ME/CFS.

My point: Something is definitely off. Everyone feels it. But nobody gets it.

I'm not saying it's ONLY post-acute sequelae. But come on

Study of 3.3M patients found 67 conditions ↑ post-influenza, incl. pneumonia, acute kidney failure. Risk lasts 1-8 weeks. Influenza may cause prolonged illness. 🦠📈
Estimating the Range and Duration of Post-influenza Symptoms, Conditions, and Diseases
Acute symptoms of influenza are understood; however, less is known about potential postacute sequelae. We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study to identify conditions with elevated risk following influenza.MethodsWe analyzed data from the Merative MarketScan Research Databases (2001–2019), including 3.3 million patients with a diagnosis of influenza. Cases were matched 1:1 to patients based on similar age, sex, care setting, and enrollment period with no influenza diagnosis. We examined the frequency of diagnosis codes in the year before and after the index influenza event, applying K-means clustering to identify diagnoses with post-influenza visit patterns similar to cough, a known sequela of influenza. Conditions were reviewed and aggregated into clinical categories. We compared trends in diagnoses between influenza cases and controls using a difference-in-differences approach.ResultsWe identified 67 diagnostic categories with significantly increased incidence post-influenza infection. Both commonly known sequelae, such as pneumonia and otitis media as well as less expected findings, such as acute kidney failure and oral candidiasis were identified. The duration of elevated risk varied by condition, ranging from a week (eg, rhabdomyolysis) to 5 weeks (eg, hemoptysis) or 8 weeks (eg, chronic bronchitis).ConclusionsWe found that influenza is associated with conditions not typically considered. Also, some symptoms last longer than commonly appreciated, suggesting that some patients may suffer from a prolonged illness due to the influenza infection. Our findings have important implications for not only demonstrating the full burden of influenza but also informing future studies to prevent or treat influenza.

I’m listening to a medical podcast and the host just used the word “sequelae,” a word I’ve only ever read and have never heard

People, I was way off on the pronunciation

Researchers analyzed nearly 2,900 blood proteins from 495 COVID survivors.

They identified 235 proteins linked to 15 persistent symptoms, revealing distinct patterns involving inflammation, immune signaling, and metabolism.

Noting that these are all K-8 institutions, perhaps the students and parents would like to be reminded that Laura Ingalls Wilder’s husband Almanzo was permanently disabled by sequelae of diphtheria infection, blighting their prospects as a young couple.

I don’t block people for disagreeing with me. What other people do is their business.

Trump is a fearful old man who is physically infirm. He would not fare well in either a debate or the likely sequelae of a debate with Omar.

That’s all there is to it. He is intimidated by her presence.

Does the wording imply that this was her second measles infection, or is it intended to preempt misattribution of fatal sequelae from that previously diagnosed episode?

They are now talking to pandemic survivors who are still grieving loved ones and suffering from sequelae. They should know that these words “pneumonia of unknown aetiology” trigger a trauma that is recent. It echoes the early days of Covid.

I wonder if a more neutral language is helpful? “Experienced” over “suffered”, and “sequelae” over “consequences”?

That's funny.
And of course you explained that the actual flu is more severe, can have long-term sequelae, and you're protecting others.

I expect that the trends will curve down even more as some of the sequelae start kicking in. I wouldn't be surprised at all for life expectancy to drop into the 50s or 60s.
