also not lost on me that most of the other fantasy and scifi here, way further down the list, is stuff like Black Mirror and Andor and Battlestar Galactica (and The OA, which should be MUCH higher) which are like the only SFF shows people who snootily hate SFF will give the time of day

"it's elevated science fiction" ARGH. Here's an idea--just do good science fiction? The baseline assumption is all sff is "bad" or "for kids" "unsophisticated." No, there's good sff & bad sff, just do a good one? Why do we assume certain protags in modern day settings = automatically probably OK??

This is key to why most SFF readers start in childhood, and it can be a struggle to learn how to read SFF as an adult if you didn’t start teen you still knew how to read like a kid.

My thoughts on multilinguality in SFF is always thus: if seasoned SFF readers can absorb conlang, complex structures and twisty plots without much exposition, why can't they absorb earth languages that might be foreign to them?
