Quakers condemned slavery, ethically and religiously, in the 1600s. Learn about it now, before the Nazi oligarchs erase it from the Internet. web.tricolib.brynmawr.edu/speccoll/qua...

Today an art history class came to SpecColl that was ostensibly about the Enlightenment, but since we had pulled an *Encyclopedie* vol with plates showing chemical/chymical things, I ended up explaining all the alchemical symbols and imagery! Yay for useful esoteric knowledge!

A few of these go viral now and then, but there are hundreds of these Theodore Geisel / Dr. Seuss cartoons from his time writing for ‘PM Magazine’

They’re terrific though the anti-Imperial-Japan ones are predictably racist

I am about to start my archival research and I find it rather daunting.
I'd love to hear your suggestions/advice/tips for working in the archives.

Any recommendations for best practices, tools/technology to use, preparation tips, etc.?

TIL Black Flames (blog.lib.uiowa.edu/speccoll/202...), one of the first science fiction fanzines written by women for women. From 1946. One of the contributors to Black Flames was "Tigrina," aka "Edyth Eyde," who I'm sure you all remember created "Vice Versa," the first American lesbian magazine.

In 15th century England, bookbinding wasn’t just functional—it was an art form with a dark and often mythic edge.

Students, faculty, and staff all come to Catalyst. It’s one of my favorite parts of the library (after SpecColl obvs!), and Niko and crew are the best!!!
With all my own grief over the Textile Makerspace lately, it was amazing to visit Niko Sanchez and Catalyst Studios in the UofA library, where their many sewing and embroidery machines are busy & their beading classes are well attended (per Niko's wonderful beaded visualization of metrics.) #DHmakes

The Englishwoman’s Domestic Magazine (1850s–70s) let Victorian women swap fashion tips, fret over crinolines, plan seaside look, & even argue back at men who mocked their hoops. A lively, crowd-sourced fashion conversation long before social media.

... Theobald Smith, who worked with Salmon on the problem of hog cholera, was the first to isolate the rod-shaped bacteria from pig intestines.

The bacteria was named in D.E. Salmon's honor.

For the record, I'd like to decline, in advance, any similar honors involving hog pathogens.
