Today I started transcribing the school log books for my #Sudbourne #OnePlaceStudy & I’m loving it! Many children were ‘irregular’ (in attendance) & often missed school to help in the fields. Stone picking & ‘topping beet’ being mentioned frequently #GenHour

This monument features the kneeling effigies of Sir Michael and his wife Anne, along their daughters, and was erected in his lifetime. Stanhope, a Privy Councillor to Queen Elizabeth I and King James I, purchased the #Sudbourne manor from the Crown

The latest blogging/social media prompt #OnePlaceCarers has got me thinking about the short-lived #Sudbourne Hospital. Built by Kenneth Mackenzie Clark in 1905, shortly after he bought the Sudbourne Estate, it became a RedCross Hospital during #WW1 but sadly burned down in 1915

An exciting #OnePlaceWednesday for me - I’m planning a birthday trip to my #OnePlaceStudy of #Sudbourne! We’ll be staying in the nearby village of #Orford. We’ll be visiting places which give an insight into the social history of Suffolk and having fun on Southwold Pier!

Bit late for #OnePlaceWednesday, but I’m on holiday in Tromso! My latest #OnePlaceStudy progress is that I have finished transcribing the 1921 census for #Sudbourne! Now deciding which Sudbourne-related transcription project to do next…

Feeling a sense of achievement with my #Sudbourne #OnePlaceStudy today - I’ve nearly finished transcribing the 1921 census. I’ve got several mini-projects on the go but trying to stick to the same 2/3 otherwise it’s difficult to see progress. I feel like I’m knocking on doors with the enumerator!

I’ve fallen behind in downloading estate agents’ sales particulars for my #OnePlaceStudies, so today I’m catching up using Zoopla & RightMove, who have some historical details on their websites #OnePlaceWednesday #Sudbourne

I love this photo of All Saints Church, #Sudbourne in the snow. Several generations of my family are buried here #OnePlaceWednesday #OnePlaceStudy

My first #AtoZchallenge post… They’re very brief, & intended to be an introduction to my #Sudbourne #OnePlaceStudy. I’ll return to each subject for a more in-depth look at a later date. This one is about All Saints Church & its restoration sudbourne.wordpress.com/2025/04/01/a...

I’ve just booked another trip to my happy place - The (UK) National Archives! 🥳 I’ll be trying to find some information about the elusive #Sudbourne #workhouse in these Very Big Books, & photographing some 1910 Valuation Act records for another one-placer

Transcription of the #Sudbourne school log books continues apace - I’m up to page 129 now. I love reading about the curriculum, songs that were sung, & mentions of village events #OnePlaceWednesday

Transcription of the #Sudbourne school log books has got off to a flying start! The 1st 30 pages of the 1875-1895 log book is complete. There are 300 pages in this log book - & there are another 2 log books - so still some way to go! #OnePlaceWednesday

Please excuse a shameless #OnePlaceWednesday plug for my talk about Dr John Cordy Keer, Medical Officer of Health for the Plomesgate District which covered my #OnePlaceStudy of #Sudbourne. It goes live at 8am tomorrow. If the role sounds bureaucratic & boring, think again…

The #Sudbourne Estate & its #OnePlaceLandowners were integral to villagers’ lives. Many would’ve been employed on the Estate. Sudbourne Hall was demolished in 1953, but a few buildings remain - bothy buildings, stables & seed house. Some are private homes, others artists studios #OnePlaceWednesday

Something of a #Sudbourne #OnePlaceWednesday milestone today - completed transcribing 2 decades of death certificates! Discovered a female deputy registrar with the same surname as the usual (male) registrar, which definitely warrants more investigation. Hope to do some analysis next.

I’ve finished transcribing the 1921 census for #Sudbourne! Transcriptions of the baptisms & burials is also underway. I’m trying not to have too many ongoing mini-projects, but might need to start on the 1910 Valuation Act. Can’t wait to get inside some of those properties! #OnePlaceWednesday
