....which ain't great, but a fairly common journalistic failing have to live with. Whereas even after being thoroughly found out and debunked, Wakefield simply swanned off to the US and Aus and found a ready audience who didn't care.

Wakefield just swanned off to Aus and carried on. Part of the problem is that those with shame who got legitimately had did pay for it somewhat (at least in penance) while the grifters just moved to another continent, found a new audience, and carried on.
