You can install SyncTerm syncterm.bbsdev.net and connect to some online BBS to try how it was like before the internet and the WEB. You can even set the speed of the connection to stimulate a modem of the era. I believe some BBS still work over the phone line, you just need an old school modem.

Deuce recently added support for the Atari ST flavor of VT52 to his SyncTerm program.

I was so excited it finally happened, that I made a new VT52 animation to celebrate. Plus I dug up 6 more I have never seen published anywhere else.

I'm not sure it's something I'll mess with, it just seemed like an interesting idea. I'm not sure something like SyncTERM that would work over LoRa. I don't have nearly enough experience with Meshtastic. It's one of those things on the "it'd be cool to mess with" lists 🤣

Did some major updates on Raspbian and reinstalled SyncTerm. Back to BBSing on the #uConsole. OS working much better now and battery life much improved.

I was able to get Syncterm to compile on it and take it BBSing.

Compiling Syncterm was actually pretty easy.
Figuring out the combination of qualifiers I had to launch it with to get it to work on the weird screen resolution was a lot harder. But I eventually figured it out.

I recommend my BBS, Guardian of Forever, but there's plenty to visit ... nearly 1,000 are listed on www.telnetbbsguide.com/bbs/list/bri... !

To get the best old-school experience, use a terminal like SyncTerm (syncterm.bbsdev.net).

so i'm trying to get ssh connections working, but the best client for BBS compatibility (SyncTERM) is barfing on ssh connections. I'd PREFER not to use telnet (as it's just clear text), but that might be the way to go. every modern bbs i connect to these days are all still telnet anyway??
