Yep; I'm all in favour of protecting historic leafy tramline villa suburbs etc. - as long as those historic leafy tramline villas are transfered to State or social-housing ownership. No more "character overlays" as a rent-seeking tool to inflate asset prices.
My firm stance, having had to deal with a historical committee.
Is that it should be limited to specific buildings, and those buildings should have to be at least partly government owned.

Depressing to read that, thanks to the misguided concerns of a loud minority, Edinburgh's much-needed north-south tramline looks like it won't happen. They think they are preserving green space when in reality they are preventing air quality improvements and prolonging reliance on polluting cars.

30mins on the coastal tram from Ostend to Middlekerke for a jewel in the crown of the Belgian coast. Den Toogoloog. A really friendly welcome. Westmalle extra with its banana notes is perfectly refreshing. Bar formerly a butchers (3 day kust tram ticket just €18)

I lived in an 18-story "monstrosity" in Berlin, directly next to a tramline and across from several restaurants, and it was so horribly affordable I was forced to stay there for six years

I /support/ the BART redesign but not the old 12-story monstrosity, as did the community, and the current proposal doesn't have it: a good example of successful community input leading to a better outcome.
