Here is Pete Hegseth's tweet announcing the return of the Confederate monument to Arlington National Cemetery. The plan is to restore it and reinstall in 2027.

It's important to point out that this monument was never referred to as a "Reconciliation Monument."

On May 1, 1865 an estimated 10,000 people, many formerly enslaved, paraded around Charleston’s Washington Race Course (modern Hampton Park), which had been repurposed as a prison camp during the last few months of the Civil War. The 54th Mass, 34th USCT, and 104th USCT accompanied the crowd.

The sight of armed Black men wearing U.S. Army uniforms and carrying federal authority was a shock to the planter class. For newly emancipated Texans, the USCT presence was a relief. Freed people traveled to USCT military posts to seek protection, report abuses and locate missing family members. /6
U.S. Colored Troops, likely members of the XXV Corps, during or shortly after the Civil War. Even as liberators, USCT soldiers faced systemic racism from their own government. They received lower pay than white soldiers for most of the war, lacked access to proper medical supplies, and were barred from rising to combat officer positions.

The USCT had high casualty rates due to forced manual labor, disease and poor support. The soldiers experienced a complex mix of racial pride and ideological purpose in liberating their people, alongside intense resentment of the physical conditions and institutional discrimination they faced. /end
A member of the U.S. Colored Troops, during or shortly after the Civil War. Soldiers deployed to Texas were plagued by severe outbreaks of yellow fever, malaria and cholera. Because the military assigned USCT regiments to swampy coastal regions and grueling border patrols along the Rio Grande, Black soldiers died from disease at disproportionately higher rates than white troops. Despite their critical role in enforcing emancipation, higher command frequently used USCT regiments for grueling physical labor rather than defensive patrolling. Black troops spent months building fortifications, clearing roads and repairing docks under brutal conditions.

#OnThisDay in 1865, the master of Arlington House--traitor Robert E. Lee--was trapped/defeated by superior maneuvering and strategy. Present at the final battle and Lee's surrender were US Colored Troops (USCT) regiments. Black men from Arlington County helped put an end to Lee's military career.
