#Ulidiidae
as a pretty ignorant dipterist, I only just now found out that all the craziest flies I saw in Colombia last August were all Tephritoids - cool!

1 pointy-eyed Pterocallini - Ulidiidae
2 psychedelic-eyed Paragorgopis - Ulidiidae
3 blue-winged Setellia -Richardiidae
4 antlered Richardia infestans

Voor #ElkeDagEenInsect een voor mij onbekend vliegje van #Saba, dat de fraaie vleugels heel sierlijk op en neer bewoog tijdens het drinken. Ulidiidae of Tephritidae misschien? Is er een dipteroloog in de zaal?

This wee fly would appear to be a new species for Britain. I think it's Tetanops sintenisi (family Ulidiidae). Seems to be an east European thing that's spread west and is now widespread in Netherlands. I've got four from a vane trap near Ipswich from May/Jun this year.

Stalked eyes or at least modifications similar to that are found in several families. Very common in Tephritoidea like the ones above & this picture-winged fly (Ulidiidae). More of a broad head in some (like Periscelididae below) & pointy eyes in others: www.inaturalist.org/observations...

My new friend, Delphinia picta, a species of picture-winged fly in the family Ulidiidae. The specific name picta is from Latin and means "painted". It is the only species in the monospecific genus Delphinia.

The photo isn’t the clearest but I love their little shadow. 🪰🧡🧡

I'm always captivated by the delightfully named Peacock Fly, Callopistromyia annulipes (Macquart, 1855) [family Ulidiidae]—this one was strutting on a log while waving its wings #FlyFriday #Diptera

A walk in Panshanger Park yesterday produced some not uncommon but attractive insects (I was looking for some leps). #insects #panshangerpark.

This is a male stalk-eyed #fly from Costa Rica. Females lack the hammerhead while males "compare sizes" for a chance to mate. Evolution is magical 🪄

At least some are patterned to mimic jumping spiders, viewed from behind - common in many Tephritoidea (see Ulidiidae below). Many also use their wings to signal to mates, so they may function to distinguish species. Otherwise?????

A nice little fly from Chicksands Wood, pretty sure that this is Otites guttatus, a fairly localised species that I've only come across once before. #Fly #Insect #Nature

Too many negative perceptions of true #flies, #Diptera, but they're SUPER diverse! Take a moment to appreciate a few of the many wonderful forms:

bee #fly; #Bombyliidae: #Ogcodocera
peacock fly; #Ulidiidae: #Callopistromyia
flat-footed fly; #Platypezidae: #Bertamyia
crane fly; #Tipulidae: #Orimarga

One of my summertime favorites: the ant-mimicking #fly #Myiomyrmica fenestrata (Order #Diptera, Family #Ulidiidae). I've found this species at only one location: Loda Cemetery Prairie, Loda Illinois. They look & act like #ants. I haven't a clue about their role in #tallgrass #prairie ecosystems

That's the thing about insects; you never know what you are going to come across. Take this tiny fly Physiphora alceae; a member of the picture-wing group Ulidiidae that doesn't have pictured wings! Our garden turns out to be only the 2nd Staffordshire location and it the 3rd county record.

Ulidiidae (picture winged fly) maybe? I've still got the Manual of Nearctic Diptera from my lab days but I'd need a microscope and a specimen to key it out. bugguide.net/node/view/22...

Het is een prachtvlieg (Ulidiidae) van Noordwest-Europa, dus klimaatverandering denk ik niet. Gewoon een zeldzame soort. Maar had je die kortgeleden? Vliegt meer in april en mei.
