Zum #HexapoDezember mit #Diptera. Uns natürlich kann ich da nicht zwischen "Mücken" und "Fliegen" wählen!
* Eine Wintermücke (Trichocera sp.)
* Die Pilzmücke Leptomorphus walkeri
* Die Hornissenschwebfliege (Volucella zonaria)
* Eine tanzende Pfauenfliege (Callopistromyia annulipes)

The butt of a Peacock Fly (Callopistromyia annulipes). They dance around showcasing the interesting patterns on their wings. The males and the females do the dance as part of a "mutual mating" dance.

I'm always captivated by the delightfully named Peacock Fly, Callopistromyia annulipes (Macquart, 1855) [family Ulidiidae]—this one was strutting on a log while waving its wings #FlyFriday #Diptera

Too many negative perceptions of true #flies, #Diptera, but they're SUPER diverse! Take a moment to appreciate a few of the many wonderful forms:

bee #fly; #Bombyliidae: #Ogcodocera
peacock fly; #Ulidiidae: #Callopistromyia
flat-footed fly; #Platypezidae: #Bertamyia
crane fly; #Tipulidae: #Orimarga
A plump, fuzzy bee fly sits on a dead pine needle on the ground. It has a white face and rump, and maroon eyes, but the rest of the body is black, with half black wings. A gray and black peacock fly. It's holding its wings upright, with their undersides showing forward. The wings are spotted, and the fly looks like a peacock. A small, elongate fly with small mirror patches on it. It has huge red eyes making up most of the head. It's resting on a leaf. An extraordinarily thin black crane fly. The thin wings are also wrapped around the body, giving it a stick-like appearance. It has pale legs with dark knees.

A Peacock Fly (Callopistromyia sp.) showing off the beautiful display on those wings! They strut around waving their wings and doing a little wiggle, an amazing behavior right in your own backyard.

Macrophotograph of a Peacock Fly (Callopistromyia sp) resting on a slightly weathered metal beam. The fly holds its patterned wings upright in an elaborate, fan-like display, appearing almost butterfly-like. Each wing is intricately marked with shades of dark brown, black, white, and subtle hints of iridescent blue, creating a mosaic-like camouflage pattern. The fly’s body is robust and heavily speckled in shades of brown, black, and cream. Bright, vivid orange-red eyes stand out distinctly on its head, along with delicate antennae and fine bristles visible along its legs and thorax. The textured metal beam beneath it has faint scratches and rust streaks, providing contrast that highlights the detail and coloration of the insect.

Here are some (mostly) black flies that have visited our yard.
#BlackFlyDay
A thick-headed fly (Conopidae) in the genus Thecophora on oregano flowers. A Western Wasp Fly (Ceriana tridens) in the family Syrphidae on parsley flowers. The fly is mostly black with yellow stripes - and very cool pointed antennae. A Woodpecker Fly in the genus Medetera standing upright on a spruce stump. It seems to have longer legs in front, so it almost looks like it's standing on its hind legs. And it has spiffy white whiskers under its eyes. A Peacock Fly (Callopistromyia annulipes) in the family Ulidiidae landed on our front porch and did its wings-up dance. It has an intricately patterned wings and is cut as a bug.
