Early morning at a very ancient khmer temple Ak Yum

Situated on the south bank of West Baray, you look down on the oldest surviving temple mountain in Southeast Asia.

Older than the Angkor empire.

The triple hidden tower temple

Bat Chum Temple is unique because its architect is known by name.

It was supervised by the architect, minister and guru Kavindrarimathana for King Rajendravarman II approximately 952CE.

Register number 2AI-4633, The black RR matches the classic architecture of the Khmer imperial gate in brownish-red stone with a blue background. The detailed stonework with elephant heads in support and the four face royal head of king Jayavarman VII the Great on top of the gate are distinct qualities of the Khmer art and architecture 850 years ago. On both sides of the gate the ring wall of Angkor Thom continues into the trees and forest with a deep green colour of the foliage. The gate itself is very clean and newly maintained, and the red laterite stone is very visible red and warm yellow in the raising sun. The sky is mostly cobalt blue with lightly traces of clouds. A midway surprise Prasat Rorng Ramong

This small temple is by the main road between Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom.

It is significant because it gives a good idea of how these early temples was build into the Angkor structure.

Sunset snack and dinner

Phnom Krom is one of three main hills framing Angkor.

The hill is great for both sunset and sunrise views over Tonle Sap.

These small motorbike sales shops are abundant there, selling food, drinks, snacks, picnic mats.

A ladybird beetle for big luck

Enjoying morning coffee in Siem Reap, this next to me was a forecast of another lucky day.

There are 15 registered variants of lucky Ladybird beetles in Cambodia. Probably there are many more.

In the the rice fields near Phnom Krom and Tonle Sap, some local restaurateurs build these small huts on stilts in the background.

This young man figured out I was friendly. Fascinated by my camera, he was offering a trade.

I had much more need of my camera than a highly annoyed frog, so I had to decline.

One of the great yearly events in Siem Reap in February is the Great Puppet Parade.

The puppets are made by local school children and teenagers. It is organised by local NGOs.

The sunset parade gathers close to 20 000 spectators.

The living quarters for the monks at Wat Thmey monastery are not spacious, but definitely well cared for and maintained.

This sunrise spot is the laterite docks in front of the Banteay Kdei. Aka 'A Citadel of Chambers', but also known as "Citadel of Monks' cells”.

That morning I found a small temple mound in the woods.

Prasat Nissay, temple of Temperance, is a small hindu temple near Phnom Bakheng in Angkor Park.

A square temple on a small mound with a lintel and a couple of corner stone walls is all thats left.

That time I came to a fork in the road, and someone else choose the one track most travelled.

The area in and around Angkor Park are excellent for off road biking and exploration. It is a healthy and green alternative to enjoy the marvels of the Khmer Empire.
