#WG1

AR7 = Seventh Assessment Report, composed of three “working groups” or volumes as follows ⬇️

WG1: physical science basis
WG2: impacts, adaptation and vulnerability
WG3: mitigation

Looking forward to a 4th term an IPCC Lead Author! I've dotted around a bit over the years:

AR4 - WG1 Radiative Forcing (focussing on land use)
AR5 - WG2 Terrestrial Ecosystems
AR6 - WG2 Water
AR7 - WG1 Global Projections

Always fantastic to work with international colleagues and learn from them

Nice schematic showing how a warmer climate increases not only the probability of extreme events, but also the intensity of extreme events with the same probability as the pre-Industrial climate. [From AR6 WG1 Ch11]

🥵 Europe has been affected by a terrible heatwave, with impacts across the continent & record-breaking temperatures in many countries. The @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 conclusions show that that heat extremes have become more intense & more frequent across the world due to human-induced climate change.

Honoured to be selected as a lead author in the upcoming IPCC report chapter on scenarios and projected temperatures (AR7 WG1 Ch5) - looks like we'll have a great team!

Predicting the future is hard, but climate models have a remarkably good record doing so (at least so far!), as we noted in the recent IPCC 6th Assessment report (WG1, chapter 1): www.ipcc.ch/report/a...

Adding the invaluable figure WG1 SPM.2 to the AR6 WG1 Synthesis Report was "opposed by Saudi Arabia and India" in a huddle over this:

I liked it so much I managed - somewhat against my expectations- to get it into the @ipcc.bsky.social ar6 wg1 chapter 2.

WG1, Chapter 9 reporting for duty 🫡
Very excited to participate in the next @ipcc.bsky.social Assessment Report, especially in a chapter with so many great colleagues and friends!

Register jockey here. I once watched this play out in real time.

White Guy 1: hey man, how's it going?
White Guy 2: oh, you know, living the dream
WG1: you know that's White folk for I wish i were dead?
WG2: sure do, Bill. Sure do. Have a good one.

The fact that in our lifetimes, global temperatures could reach higher than ever over the past 3,000,000 years is hard to comprehend.

The last glacial maximum, when sea levels were 134 m lower than today, was only 23,000 years ago.

How long CO₂ lasts in the atmosphere largely depends on how much humanity keeps emitting, how much the world warms and how strong carbon-cycle feedbacks are and will be.

This was already covered in the IPCC AR6 WG1 Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis report (See fig 7.3), but has only gotten worse.

And this crucial indicator was ignored in the recent 'IPCC' indicator updates (Piers Forster et al. 2023 & 2024).

My graph is based on the IPCC AR6 WG1 feedbacks (see figure Ts.17)

Low (net) feedbacks lead to a high Climate Sensitivity. High feedbacks to a low Climate Sensitivity.

This data was already included in IPCC AR6 WG1 and should be included as a crucial climate indicator:
