Nine percent of U.S. homes have a water leak of 50 gallons a day, EPA says, and nobody hears it. At that rate it is 50 x 365 = 18,250 gallons a year. A common culprit is a worn toilet flapper; a few drops of food coloring in the tank will tell you in ten minutes.

A faucet dripping once per second wastes more than 3,000 gallons a year (EPA WaterSense).

The tap is almost off.
One drop still hangs.

Save this for when a room keeps dripping after the hand leaves.
Send this to someone who still waits for the last one.

EPA created the WaterSense label for low-flow fixtures of all types, including showerheads. WS showerheads must use 2.0 GPM or less, which is great. Also, the WS standard includes performance req'ts related to spray coverage and spray force, so you don't have a crappy shower experience. (4/6)

Some thoughts on showers and tubs and #water use:

Showers account for 20-30% of household indoor water use. This matters for a few reasons. First, much of the country is now in perpetual drought. EPA has this handy site to find which parts of the US are in what level of drought (!)

Drought & WaterSense | US EPA
Every year, drought strikes some part of the country. If your area is experiencing a drought, there are actions you can take to help your community by reducing your water use.

That said, there are excellent showerheads that use 1.5 or 1.75 GPM (30-40% less than the federal max). I have a 1.75 GPM WaterSense labeled one from IKEA that now sells for $4.

(caveat: to avoid temperature fluctuations, 1.5 GPM showers need better mixing valves. Ask your plumber.)
