A very important paper on #WhoopingCranes from a big team of researchers, including ours at the International Crane Foundation. Analysis of 150 years of genomic data reveals the species has lost 70% of its genetic diversity. The authors recommend maintaining Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

Today was one of our warmest days here in Wisconsin this year. It was 95F. Wished I had my own personal water feature like this pair of Whooping Cranes at ICF. These are a few still shots when they were bathing. I think that's the female surfacing after a good head dunk. #WhoopingCranes #birds

Carolina Wolfberry (Lycium carolinianum) is a US native plant related to gogi berries that grows in coastal environments from TX to SC. They're great plants for #pollinators and provide tasty berries for birds (especially #WhoopingCranes) and people. 🌿 #CarolinaWolfberry

A Whooping Crane with spread wings after a batch. You can see the left wing is clipped. This bird resides at the ICF (International Crane Foundation) in Baraboo Wisconsin. The wing is clipped so the bird does not fly away out of it's enclosure. The whooping crane pair in this enclosure have a huge open area to live in with a small pond. In front of the pond on one side is a small amphitheater where humans can sit and observe and enjoy them. Since being listed as endangered in 1967, the species rebounded from fewer than 50 individuals to its current stable numbers which are 500+. This year 57 first year juvenile whooping cranes were counted in the 2025-2026 migration season in their southern habitat in Texas. The Whooping Cranes have been a slow, but steady success in bird conservation. ICF in Baraboo, WI plays a major role in this effort led by Dr. George Archibald, who along with Ron Sauey, founded the ICF.
