the HHS report on gender dysphoria in youth is out. i'll be taking a closer look and will likely have deeper analysis out early next week but a cursory look shows 12 new york times citations in this report justifying banning puberty blockers. opa.hhs.gov/gender-dysph...

I just finished a three-year term as an editor at an international relations journal. I began at the start of the LLM era but ended right in the middle of it. Our volume of submissions tripled and our desk reject rate rose to 75%. I have some thoughts.

The American academy, as it exists, depends on being recognized as a beacon of scholarship (manifested by citations, English as lingua Franca, desirability of degrees, etc) by the rest of the world. It is at immanent risk of losing that.

Been reading #writingstudies research where instructors make students use genAI chatbots for brainstorming, drafting, writing, revising, editing, and my perennial question that I do not find addressed is: what relationship to documented truth, evidence, knowledge do those student papers have?

what does ‘misbehaviour’ sound like? in new open access work i ask this question in the context of school discipline policies, looking at how ideologies of ‘im/proper language’ and ‘im/proper behaviour’ coalesce and get co-constructed with one another. doi.org/10.1080/0962...

I think BlueSky will be significantly better for conferences than any other site. Organisers can create speaker starter packs to allow attendees to auto-follow all speakers. Also a custom feed of all folks skeeting abut a conf would be a big win.
Advocating that tech conferences start including Bluesky accounts on profile pages and badges is already working!
