The Legislature has the power to change this by passing the Minnesota Starter Homes Act to allow more homes and more choices in the communities where people already live.

It’s great to see New Ulm expand its housing options, but with MN short over 100k homes, we cannot afford to wait for other cities to do the same.

It’s time for a regional approach: #YestoHomes legislation.

Faced with a housing crisis, this southern Minnesota city is saying yes to experimental builds
Over the summer, the New Ulm City Council voted in favor of tiny homes, shed houses and zoning flexibility.

💸 You shouldn’t need to make six figures to buy a home — but in much of Minnesota, you do.

It’s time for the #mnleg to say #YesToHomes: make it easier to build more housing, end exclusionary zoning, and help Minnesotans find a stable place to call home. 🏡

In Minnesota, it now takes a six-figure income to buy a home
House prices in the state are rising faster than incomes, making homeownership — long a marker of middle class status — out of reach for many.

This is sprawl. 🗞️Read all about it. It's bad for all (including climate). #YesToHomes but not everywhere.

A rural holdout is now one of the Twin Cities’ fastest-growing suburbs
Northwest metro suburbs mushroomed around rural Dayton, which is now reckoning with explosive growth of its own and pressure from its neighbors to address it.

Our twin cities are making progress to fill the gap but it’s not enough. We invite cousins in the suburbs & greater MN to make it easier to build more homes. I look forward to the help of these 2 fantastic mission-driven nonprofits to help us make the changes we need at the state level.

Every Minnesotan deserves a high-quality home in the community they choose. But too many communities still ban the kinds of housing everyday people can afford. 😤

That's why we'll be back at the Capitol next year, calling on lawmakers to say #YesToHomes! 🏡 📣

Legislature missed an opportunity to juice homebuilding again this year • Minnesota Reformer
Legislators chose to allow the cities to delay addressing our housing shortage, to deny they are part of the problem, and to continue to exclude Minnesotans.

Care about reducing our collective Twin Cities carbon footprint? Do you live in the suburbs? Email your state representative and state senator - tell them to support #yestohomes bills in next year's session, and stop individual small cities from holding back our state's progress.

Evan *knows* what he is talking about. Legislators, pay attention for the 2025-2026 session and help us build more affordable, family-sized homes, please! cc #mnleg #yestohomes @moreneighbors.org
Our (American, not just MN) channeling of housing into 2.5 basic types-- single family homes, small apartments, townhouses--makes this issue more acute than it needs to be. SFHs and townhouses are (stairs!) less likely to be mobility friendly than new construction multi family.
One form of discrimination that’s explicitly legal! (Not defending it necessarily but getting seniors out of their homes is a good thing writ large.)

Cities say they're doing just fine, but we've already tried local control and now we're 100k homes short.

This also included the A-19 amendment which limits cities power to require HOAs.
Cities in MN are using HOAs to do things like force front yards to be owned by the HOA rather than by homeowners.
HOAs can still be formed for parks, pools, and other amenities. As chosen by residents. #YesToHomes

#YestoHomes co-chair Anne Mavity testifying in support that the status quo is not working by viewing the outcomes of a housing shortage of 100k homes.

40 units at a time is not enough to address our shortage.

Local regulations are blocking homes.

City parking mandates drive car dependency, prevent walkability, and raise rents.

Often by $225/month per parking spot.

Many cities require 2 or 3 car garages, plus guest parking! #SF2229 limits mandates to 1 spot/home. Letting neighbors choose what they really need. #YesToHomes #MNleg
May 1, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Aesthetic mandates, requiring a large porch, specific siding, and more are used by cities to require a certain minimum home price. This prevents new neighbors who cannot afford the mandated aesthetics from moving in to new homes in that community. #SF2229 #YesToHomes #MNleg
May 1, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Currently cities require HOAs for a variety of reasons. A major one is to simply reduce the allowed density in an area. Often leaving land empty simply to reduce the overall homes per acre to half or a quarter of what might otherwise be allowed. #SF2229 #YesToHomes #MNleg
