- Countless Iranians and Gazans
- The passengers on AA5342
- At least 6 US servicemen

- Common Decency

The Senate passed the ROTOR Act in Dec 2025. But the House, at Johnson's urging, refused to pass it. Instead, they're trying to claim their own ALERT Act solves the problem.

It doesn't. The NTSB wants all aircraft to have key locator systems. Without them, another crash like AA5342 is inevitable.
NTSB slams new aviation safety bill in letter as it falls short of implementing their recommendations
In the letter signed by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy along with other board members said they cannot support the ALERT Act because it does not fully address all of 50 of their recommendations.

What a travesty for this country that even an aviation disaster can't make politicians, who we employ, vote for better safer standards. The victims of AA5342 (including the future of USFS) died in vain.

The House of Representatives just voted down a bill aimed at preventing a repeat. It lost by a single vote.
The NTSB issued its final report on the mid-air collision between a PSA CRJ-700 and US Army Blackhawk helicopter, finding a chain of systemic failures led to the accident and providing a litany of safety recommendations to the FAA, US Army and others. www.flightradar24.com/blog/flight-...

In the context of the Olympics in progress, I’ll remind you that AA5342 was not the only tragedy for USA Figure Skating. In 1961, on this day, the whole team was killed in a plane crash in Belgium. Here is the memorial plaque at the Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, where they trained.

"The NTSB has urged regulators to move from accident-driven rulemaking to data-driven regulation. The goals are simple. Identify emerging risks before they produce fatalities. Act on evidence, not aftermath."

Tim Lilley, the father of AA5342 First Officer Sam Lilley, says Congress needs to act.
Aviation Can’t Keep Learning Safety Lessons the Hard Way
My son, Sam Lilley, was the first officer on American Flight 5342. We will never get over losing him. It is a reality my family lives with every day.

One year after horrific mid-air collision, NTSB to vote on a cause.

I’m sick. They manipulated the scores so NBC gets their story with Maxim going to the Olympics after his parents died on AA5342.

I wanted Max to go too, but not like this.

The #AA5342 crash on approach to DCA was “a tragic failure not only of the protections intended to keep the traveling public and users of the national airspace system safe, but also of the institutions that design and maintain them.”

Good deep dive from @willguisbond.com at @theaircurrent.com.
Special Report: The night everything at DCA finally went wrong
D.C. midair crash was the result of a complete collapse of the protections designed to keep aviation safe — and the institutions that design and maintain them

YUP. And AA5342, considering both DOD and DHS's increased use of transponder-off flights.

Combine hubris and incompetence and we're ALL at risk. The levels of both have never been higher than in this 47 administration.

The 67 victims of the AA5342 and military helicopter crash were killed by their own govt. Now Congress wants to make that possible again.
