sorry to be a pedant on main but I keep seeing people hyphenate adverb and adjective combinations like "carefully-selected." WHAT are we doing here

Unless they say it out loudly (and it is loudly, an adverb, not loud, an adjective), these Republicans are complicit. This is a hell of their own making and I hope they all burn.
November 2, 2026 at 10:09 AM
i like answering this with 'carefully' because nobody's expecting an adverb there

i like that the big divide on this post is whether people read it, correctly, as "*run explicitly* on banning online gambling" or whether they ignored the modifying verb and adverb and read it as "i don't think anyone should ban online gambling"
i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment
Lula won in part by banning online gambling

My account name is an adverb

•Former• PM…

… •now• says this.

(This anodyne sentence ↑, read more than once, with focus on adjective and adverb, tells you much about the failure of nerve at the top of Westminster politics.)

What a supremely delectable string of words this logline is 😱🤩 I especially appreciate the work of the adverb “hornily.” To team up is human, to team up hornily is divine

What’s weird is I can write in English with 96% accurate grammar, but have no idea what any of this is or even what half those words mean. For example, I have no idea what an adverb is.

I'm not expecting a whole paragraph every post, but I PREFER seeing more than one verb and one adverb. If you can regularly use all eight parts of speech in your replies I'll consider it

Adverb!!!

I don't mean to be rude, it's just that I forget not everyone says fuck as a fundamental noun, verb, adjective, and adverb the way I do.
October 26, 2026 at 11:39 AM
The fundamentals haven't changed just because the word "agentic" is prepended as an adjective or adverb.
October 31, 2026 at 6:30 AM
🥰 Thank you! I was chewing on it for almost as long as trying to figure out a dang gif to accompany it.

The adverb is so essential here, teaming up alone does NOT cover what they get up to. 💀

so next time someone corrects you on your adverb, you can tell that prescriptivist where they can stick their "-ly"

doll doesn't care what adverb describes the manner in which it is groped, doll only cares that it is used like a doll

I’m sure if I won the World Series I’d be using it profusely as a noun, verb, adverb, propositional phrase..

"spoke quite poor"Attacking migrant care workers' English qualifications while failing basic adverb rules is a truly world-class self-own. Not just economic illiteracy but literal illiteracy!!

“characterologically”
an adverb meaning in a way that relates to a person's character, or to characterology—the academic study of human character and personality development.
I learned a new word today.

Chinese word of the day, 2026-11-02:

按理 (ànlǐ) - (adverb) normally
November 2, 2026 at 1:34 PM
Because statements that inflect grandiosity can rarely be taken seriously. It's a vague adverb that reduces the directness of a statement; indirect statements are minimizing in nature.

I loathe "some" as an adverb, but everyone does it now.

Also, my state needs to tell the feds to pound sand.
The Trump administration has demanded that Washington state election officials set aside ballots from some 400 voters that, it says, could be noncitizens.

The problem with any piece of writing advice is that they get held up as absolutes, when often they’re just describing things inexperienced writers do. Ham-handed, too-frequent adverb use = weak prose, so we hear “never use any adverbs,” which is silly. Carefully chosen adverbs are often fine.

Okay, I need:

1. Adverb
2. Adjective
3. Plural Noun
4. Adjective
5. Name of Person
6. Nonsense Word
7. Verb
8. Noun
I imagine it more like a MadLib. Just plug in a handful of absurd key words and you’re done.
Do you think they had the "Obama mean to Cheesecake Factory" stories already written?

Like they have a stockpile of unused articles for fake controversies from the Obama years, and one really excited old-timer got to go down into the cellar and crack open a bottle of Koch Brothers Special Reserve?
