Weed infestation is one of the most damaging biotic factors limiting crop production. In this review, authors discuss bacterial allelopathy as a sustainable approach for biological control of weeds, compared to traditional herbicides. 🌱

#foto WHITETOP, ripening seedpods, 1000 / 5000 per plant (Lepidium draba) Moving higher up mountain, now at 1300m

Uses allelopathy (allelon = mutual +
pathos = to suffer, like US politics):
Roots & shoots contain glucosinolates,
break down into phytotoxic compounds

Cover crops as biological alternative to weeding and chemical herbicides
Using Cover Crops to Suppress Garden Weeds Frequent weeding during summer heat is labor-intensive. An alternative to manual removal or chemical herbicides is the use of cover crops (siderates) to preemptively block weed growth through biological competition. Cover crops function by competing with weeds for sunlight, water, and space. Many species also employ allelopathy—the release of specific chemical compounds that inhibit the germination of weed seeds. To prevent aggressive weeds from colonizing empty spaces, gardeners can implement soil rehabilitation after the harvest. Crop Primary Advantage Mustard Rapid growth and creation of dense above-ground biomass Phacelia Weed suppression and pollinator attraction Research indicates that mustard and phacelia can provide up to 90% soil coverage within eight weeks. This dense canopy deprives weed grasses of light, causing them to perish. For this method to work, every available patch of earth must be sown without leaving gaps. Sowing typically occurs in August or September immediately after a plot is cleared.

Just as you can have companion planting, where you plant things together to improve the outcome one or both of the plants, you can have ‘enemy planting’ which you’ll want to avoid.

The allelopathy that I’ve only just heard about, we just have two rows at the end of a bed, so we're not going to see much effect. At the moment I have Bulgarian Giant leeks growing next to the fennel, they grow fast anyway, so I guess not much is going to slow them down, but I'll let you know.

I'm surprised nothing grew, I did the same in another bed last year, and some time after the garlic had been replaced by red cabbage, I was able to pull a few baby carrots. They were early Nantes, but ended up being late Nantes!
There are scientific papers about this effect in garlic (allelopathy).
