Book cover: ANTISEMITISM AND THE LEFT ON THE RETURN OF THE JEWISH QUESTION Robert Fine and Philip Spencer Page text from inside the book: Antisemitism, critical theory and the ambivalences of Marxism Citizens, let us think of the basic principle of the International: Solidanty. Orr when we have established this life-giving principle on a sound bass among t numerous workers of all countries will we attain the great final coal which he set ourselves. (Karl Marx - a speech given following a congress of the F International, 8 September, 1872)' During my vouth I rather leaned toward the propnosis that the lews of differen countries would be assimilated and that the Jewish question would thus disappear in a quasi-automatic fashion. The historical development of the last quarter of a century has not confirmed this perspective .... The Jewish question, 1 repeat, i indissolubly bound up with the complete emancipation of humanity. (Interie with Leon Trotsky).? Did universalism prepare the way for the antisemitism to come? Our ansie may appear equivocal. We do not accept the judgment that the universals of Enlightenment and the modern revolutionary tradition was simply a failure, ba we do recognise that one function of universalism was to represent Jews a be embodiment of the particular and the enemy of humanity. Our convicion, though, is that a universalism that creates its own 'other' ends up as no unives. ism at all. This was not only, of course, a theoretical question. The reconstruction of the Jewish question had real consequences both for those designated as the other of the universal and for the wider democratic culture. The idea that che multiple problems of modernity could be solved by emptying the world of lens was taken up with enthusiasm and urgency by antisemitic movements in the latter part of the nineteenth century; it turned out to have extraordinary mobile-ing power and to appeal to a wide range of political actors. If the legal recognitia. of Jews was being accomplished in most countries of Western Europe by de end of the 1870s, though not in the East, this w…

In late-fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Italy, we are taught in school, "humanist" scholars began to develop new practices of reading and writing oriented toward the recuperation of the wisdom of Greek and Latin antiquity. In the sixteenth century, the application of their methods to the textual foundations of Catholicism by Protestant theologians like Martin Luther and John Calvin challenged the monopoly of the Roman Catholic Church. That challenge began the debates about God's governance of the world that we call the "Reformation" and the "Counter-Reformation," debates whose Chapter 8 "WHICH IS THE MERCHANT HERE, AND WHICH THE JEW?": ACTING JEWISH IN SHAKESPEARE'S ENGLAND In sooth, I know Enot why Mam so sad, (n.the Companies of critics have pother one motives for the merchant's melancholy. Their explanations range from the self-alienation of the capitalist to the repressed homoeroticism of a man whose best friend wants to marry.! Shakespeare's own audience might have suspected yet another cause. "Our English proverbe "To looke like a Jewe'," noted Thomas Coryate in 16ıı, means to look like "one discontented." Even their cookbooks taught Elizabethans to associate melancholy with Judaism. As Henry Butte's diet book put it in 1599, the Jew's "complexion is passing melancholious," a situation he attributed to an excessive fondness for goose.?
